Michael Carrick gives brutal verdict after Middlesbrough’s costly error in defeat to Preston

Michael Carrick gives a brutal verdict after Middlesbrough’s costly error in what played out to be a 2-1 defeat to Preston.

The Boro boss said his side “shot themselves in the foot” as the Lilywhites secured all three points for the Lilywhites, Stefan Stefan Thordarson put the hosts ahead on the 28th minute, Delano Burgzorg had levelled for the visitors on 52 minutes, then Emil Riis netted a late winner to make it a third win in four for the hosts.

The result lifts Preston up to 14th in the Championship table, seven points off the playoff spots, while Boro drop to sixth.

Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick told BBC Radio Tees:

“Today I thought it was there for us. We started well, defended well and took control for large parts.

“There were a couple of moments where we shot ourselves in the foot. The boys are devastated, I’m disappointed. It is a horrible day to be sitting here with nothing.

“We were really good for a lot of the game; when Delano scored, the emotion was great to be part of. We thought it was coming again and it went to other way.

“There is a hell of an opportunity in front of us, an awful lot to play for and big games coming up. We’ve got to learn.

On Emmanuel Latte Lath: “He felt his groin, how badly and to what extent I don’t know as yet, we’ll have to wait and see. It was a blow but I felt we dealt with it well and should have won the game.”

Carrick, per Sky Sports:

“It was a team moment. Their goalkeeper’s got the ball and we’ve just let him go through the middle of the pitch and obviously the ending is not nice to watch.

“It’s not a good watch at all. We’ve shot ourselves in the foot from being in a position where all we could see was another goal coming our way.

“These are the lessons we have to learn and we’ve got to keep doing something about it or we’ll keep being in the position that we’re in.

“We were good at a lot of things for a lot of the game. We started ever so well and defended really well at times but it’s just the drop out in a couple of moments.

“We were shooting ourselves in the foot from nowhere and the boys are devastated. I’m devastated. It’s a horrible day to be sitting here with nothing.”

Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Lancashire:

“Good game. The right outcome for us and three points. I’m delighted with the performance and the application against a good side.

“I’ve said before, in possession, Boro are a very, very dangerous team.

“We had a couple of moments where we weren’t brave enough in the first half but I would always back us to get moments of control and we did that.

“Second half, it was similar. I felt we got to grips and they scored on the counter, but we were a lot stronger without the ball and had moments with it.

Heckingbottom, per Sky Sports:

“The groans are ridiculous when [Osmajic] is running himself into the ground game after game and we’ve got [Riis] who’s scored that many goals on the bench.

“We want to be an intense, aggressive team and our subs were fantastic today and one of the reasons they were fantastic is that they mean we can keep our intensity levels as a group so that our levels don’t drop and make it easy for the opposition.

“When people’s physicals do drop, we expect our subs to come on and raise the physical intensity of the game.”
