Kieran McKenna has no issue with boos from Ipswich fans after ‘unacceptable’ defeat to Charlton

Kieran McKenna has no issue with boos from Ipswich fans after an ‘unacceptable’ 3-0 defeat to Charlton on Tuesday night.

Then Charlton capitalised in the second half, scoring three times in 12 minutes, Sonny Carey breaking the deadlock on 52 minutes, followed by a header from Macaulay Gillesphey, and substitute Miles Leaburn adding to it.

The result becomes the Addicks’ second away win of the season, while for Ipswich, who had been previously unbeaten at home, suffered their second consecutive loss, worsened by an injury to goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Charlton sit 5th with 18 points from 11 games played, while Ipswich are in 13th place with 13 points from 10 games played.

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna told BBC Radio Suffolk:

“There are two sides to the game. We need to score the goals when we have the opportunity to do so, and we’ve had loads of opportunities, then we’ve given up a poor goal and our reaction was nowhere near good enough after that.

“We didn’t do the fundamentals anywhere near well enough, didn’t find the right response in a difficult moment, and conceded really, really poor goals in quick succession.

“That bit is unacceptable and we have to address it. It was the same in the Middlesbrough game – when things went against us we went far south really quick.

“We have to dig deeper individually and find more unity and togetherness to defend well when things go against us.”

McKenna, per Sky Sports:

“Of course it’s a terrible result for us. There’s two different bits to the game. There’s the spell after their goal, the rest of the game after their goal where our reaction was nowhere near good enough.

“We did not find the strength we needed individually or as a team to deal with the negative momentum, didn’t do the fundamentals well enough, didn’t defend set-plays, didn’t defend our box, didn’t track runs well enough, didn’t defend our goal anywhere near well enough.

“That reaction was nowhere near good enough. There’s the other bit of the game where first half there was a lot of the aspects that were really, really good.

“We should have scored and have been ahead…we controlled 95 per cent of the half really well and over the course of the night we’ve have had 30 shots and should score, on a normal night, three or four goals.

“We know it’s also not good enough to be more clinical but we weren’t clinical enough with our execution.”

Charlton manager Nathan Jones told BBC Radio London:

“It was a magnificent result – some squad, some team.

“In the first 25 minutes we had to get to grips with it because we were really passive and allowed them to work patterns and get their good players into areas, and we had to defend the box really, really well.

“Then we became more aggressive, got on the front foot a little bit more, and we had four really good chances in the first half.

“At half-time I got into the players and said ‘Look, if we want to be passive, these are a good side who will play round you and through you’. In the second half we were really aggressive and went after the game.

“The goals were excellent goals and the game-changers that went on were excellent. It was some performance.”

Jones, per Sky Sports:

“They have got some squad, some team and the first 25 minutes we had to get to grips with it and felt that we were really passive and allowed them to work their patterns to get their good players into areas and we had to defend the box really, really well.

“Then we started to get a bit more aggressive and started to get on the front foot a bit more and felt we had the best chances (of the) first half.

“I think we had four real good chances and at half-time we got into the players and we went after the game. Second half we really went after the game and the goals were excellent goals and that was some performance.

“We come here – a wonderful team, a big budget, a load of players well coached, a good manager, a wonderful way of playing, difficult to play against – and you have to be right at it.

“Let’s go out and go right up against them and see how good they are and we found out. It’s the most wonderful group, the most humble group.

“I thought we were really, really good tonight and I’m very proud of that performance, proud of the club, there won’t be many better performances at this place all season.”

Here’s how Twitter reacted after Kieran McKenna says he has no issue with boos from Ipswich fans after an ‘unacceptable’ defeat to Charlton…

@TheValley_SE7: Better team won. Made you run out of ideas. Defence was too solid, counter was too dangerous.😮‍💨 Ref felt that sorry he started dishing out corners at one point 👀 funny to think there was two leagues between us last season😆 How much did that team cost ya btw?🧐 #cafc

@edmking85: Can someone find the statistics from Ipswich’s set pieces (scored & conceded) since Hudson came in? We are awful at defensive and attacking set plays. He’s genuinely got to go, never thought I’d call for set piece coach to be sacked ffs. God I miss @sammorsy08, come back #itfc

@Chickenybacon: Time to go Kieran, we spent a fortune on players who dont care for the badge, we have previously quality players who are shadows of their former selves, our only decent results this season been against poor teams, we have become a joke & its terrifying considering our squad value

@itfc2515: Took Charlton lightly and it backfired. Had enough chances to kill that game. 30 shots and no goals ? Something needs to change we are too easy to score against, and we aint clinical at all

@BigBadBraz: That’s for giving us all your crap players for years. Safe journey home 👍🏻 🔴⚪️

@JimWillams: Used to like Ipswich a lot but your fanbase and club commentators have become so entitled. One season in the Prem and you all think you’re massive. Outplayed tonight, just accept it and lose with grace #cafc

@itfcrg: unfortunately the manager is in permanent job safety, so this result and the inevitable failure in our promotion goals over the next 7-8 months will all be swept under the rug under the illusion of something like “we are a side in transition” clubs a mess. this can’t be excused.

@edmking85: Full credit to Jack Clarke for his work rate and passion today. Even at 3-0 down, he never stopped running. Fully deserves a start on Saturday just on that, a few others could learn from that example #itfc

@Slm1110_: McKenna is on £5 million a year, we have a right to expect him to produce; recruitment hasn’t worked, system doesn’t fit those he did buy in, and the soul of the promotion teams ripped out for no improvement – pressure is mounting, and rightly so. Horrendous performance

@HarryCundy1: O’Shea and Greaves are the worst centre backs I have ever seen. And to think we sold Wolfy AND burgess. Miles above. Hats off Clarke and Akpom, only two who looked a level above
