James McClean responds to Shrewsbury fans who aimed abuse at him in Wrexham’s defeat

James McClean responds to the stand full of Shrewsbury fans who aimed abuse at him in Wrexham’s 2-1 defeat on Thursday night.

The 35 year old came across a video filmed from the home end, with one fan calling him a ‘fenian cunt’ and in return shared it via his Instagram stories and wrote: “In fairness if I was born and raised in Shrewsbury I’d probably be this angry as well cause its an absolute cesspit full of inbreds.”

His response underscores the ongoing tension between McClean and certain sections of opposing fanbases, often due to his well-documented stance on not wearing a poppy during Remembrance Day, citing the British army’s actions in his native Derry.

This latest incident adds to the narrative of McClean as a player who does not shy away from confrontation, both on and off the pitch.

McClean was also on the end of a being taken out by Toto Nsiala which resulted in huge cheers from the home fans.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said to Sky Sports: “He’s fine. James is used to it wherever he goes. Fans get on his back home and away and sometimes it can be tough and spill over but he is used to it.”

The boss also admitted his side were well short of their best, saying of the tough questions that they will now have to face: “We’ve had a lot of good times and had a lot of praise but tonight we deserve to get criticism because the level of our performance wasn’t where it needed to be but we will take that criticism together as a group and come out and respond next week.”

James McClean responds to the stand full of Shrewsbury fans who aimed abuse at him in Wrexham’s 2-1 defeat on Thursday night…

@_avfcjames: doesn’t help himself does he

@BEN1169008: So he can be abused for the night but the minute he says something back it’s not fair game? Shut up hahaha

@Albannachh: There’s nothing the English hate more than an Irishman with the wrong opinions. ‘How DARE he not support the army that machine gunned civilians in his city!’

@ChrisDennis5: He was always going to say something like that when their fans have been on him all game. They well and truly got under his skin, and this proves it. Maybe if he didn’t give it out so much, people would leave him alone. 🤡

@NUFCLC: Why does he always wait till after to put it on his Instagram story rather than saying this to the fans at the time?

@BWFCNathan94: Can give it but certainly cannot take it

@kevdodds:
That just makes it even worse for him.
He’s just showing how rattled he is.
And he’ll get a fine for it.
Lovely 👌

@froomielol: The amount of coins, bottles and cans that were thrown at him, I’m not surprised how he’s reacted. He hadn’t done anything all game and they went to assault him just because of who he is – I’d be pissed off too

@ChrisMc_1985: James McClean is hated for no reason stands up for his beliefs and loads of people decide to hate the guy idiots

@pacificpaddy: Yep, we’re all livid about winning 2-1 and McClean being so rattled he can barely pass the ball 🤣🤣🤣

@hughhayward: Were actually just finding it hilarious… Even the most ardent of wrexham lovers knows Shrewsbury is great town, full of character and life …of all the things to try and get at us he’s ran with that.
And that’s your captain.. some example that

@Paul_C_1994: I see James McClean is still living rent free inside the heads of every little inbred mutant that hates him 😎

@_mstephenson88: Sounds like James McClean is having a good weekend

@maxx1875: James McClean is probably the most infuriating player out there, cries like a fucking baby when he loses and can’t even back it up by his shit performances

@DundieKing: He rattled them 🤣🤣

@DetritusBramble: Unpopular opinion: I quite like James McClean 👏💪

@Rjeffrey1872: James mcclean talking about being angry cause of where you were born is the most ironic thing I’ve seen this year

@D_Dunne2: As much as I don’t agree with his views he is quite funny at times

@LeighMcManus1: Whatever you think about James McClean, you have to admit his commitment to shithousing is unprecedented

@Jack642784: Shrewsbury is one of the nicest places to live in England. Wonder what he thinks of places like Crewe, Grimsby, Bradford, Stevenage, Blackpool, or even Wrexham 😂😂😂

@mikec1704: How does he manage to rattle every single fan base every week. I love it

@mfwic1865: Doesn’t work cos Shrewsbury is one of the nicest places in UK

@GavinBenecke: Bless, he turned into a keyboard warrior.

@9018kl: Can’t help but have some sort of admiration for James McClean. Proper wanker but I still like him
