Grimsby 2-2 Man Utd (12-11p) – Amorim in disbelief, Mark Goldbridge and AngryGinge gutted

Grimsby 2-2 Man Utd (12-11p) – Ruben Amorim was in disbelief, while Man Utd fans Mark Goldbridge and AngryGinge were left gutted.

Fair to say that as one of the most exhilarating Carabao Cup matches in some time, die-hard supporters of both teams reacting to the game’s highs and lows, from stunning goals to nail-biting near-misses.

Grimsby led 2-0 at half time with goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren (the latter via an error from Andre Onana), but United fought back through Bryan Mbeumo and a last-minute Harry Maguire equaliser.

In the shootout, Matheus Cunha missed United’s fifth penalty, and Mbeumo hit the bar in sudden death, sparking a pitch invasion by jubilant home fans at Blundell Park.

Manager Ruben Amorim faced many a chant from the home crowd, chants such as “sacked in the morning”, “Can we play you every week?” chants amid a dismal performance.

Grimsby Town boss David Artell speaking to ITV on how he sums up the night: “A long penalty shoot-out.

“I said to Sean halfway through the shoot-out, first round last year, we beat Bradford 9-8 on penalties. I said to him before the penalty shoot-out started, look, what’s a penalty shoot-out?

“It’s a technical thing, it’s a psychological thing. You’ve got brilliant techniques. We work hard every day to get better. It’s a thing above the front door.

“Another chance to get better and this group want to get better. The techniques are fine, they’re going to feel nervous walking up, butterflies. Don’t worry about that.

“This is an accumulation of 15 months, 18 months, all encompassed in one night. Look, they’re an unbelievable team, Manchester United. They’ve got an unbelievable manager and they’re on the right track, you can see that.

“We’ve got an unbelievable group of players as well, who want to play for this football club, live in the area and want to get better every day.”

Grimsby goalkeeper Christy Pym said to Sky Sports: “Yeah, it hasn’t really sunk in yet. I’m a United fan myself so I’m half fuming a little bit. But nights like this are what you play football for, so yeah, beautiful.

“I should have done a little bit better, shouldn’t I? Yesterday me and the goalkeeping coach Steve sat down for a good hour going through penalties, just in case.

“It kept changing, it was a bit frustrating, but I saved one, kept us in it, and then the boys did the rest. They were brilliant.”

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim speaking to Sky Sports: “In the end, it doesn’t matter if we recover or not, it’s the signs the team gave during the game, the beginning of the game. I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch. The best players lose because one team can win against any group of players, and I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that’s it. We lost, the best team won.”

On what he means by that: “I think it’s really clear what they spoke, so let’s move on from this day and I think it was clear for everybody what happened today.”

“The way we start the game without any intensity, all the idea of the pressure, we were completely lost and that’s why I think they spoke really loud.”

Amorim speaking to Sky Sports on whether his side are making the same mistakes from last season: “I think that is the problem. When you lose but see something new, it’s different. When you see something like today, it’s hard to talk about that. I just want to say I’m really sorry for the fans. The support they gave me, the support that with all the support they help the team. I have nothing to say. I’m really sorry.”

On how he can solve the problems: “I think they gave the response on the pitch today, so I don’t need total about that. We have a game at the weekend, then we have two weeks and we will solve things out.”

On the goalkeeping issue: “With all due respect, when you lose to a fourth division team, it’s not the goalkeeper. It’s everything. It’s the environment, it’s the way we face the competition. We know that we are in the moment everything people will pay attention to everything. It’s going to be massive every detail. We show the performance today, so my players spoke, for me, really loud.”

Grimsby Town defender Tyrell Warren speaking to ITV: “Amazing. Surreal really. I’m lost for words.”

On scoring his first ever Grimsby Town goal: “Long time coming. We’re getting in the areas to score. I personally think I should score more. What a great time to score.”

On the penalties: “It was dragging on. It was cold out there, I was shivering. I was last to take my pen. I just wanted to score and keep the tie going.”

Grimsby Town midfielder Kieran Green speaking to ITV: “It’s unbelievable. I think it’ll be one that’ll live in the history of this club for a long time. I know a lot of the fans were looking forward to it, we were looking forward to it, so it’s one that will stick around forever, I can imagine.

“I think that we went 2-0 up and everyone was probably surprised to be in that situation. I know they’ve come back from 2-2 and it’s two-all, let’s have it right, we’d have taken 2-2 at the death, so 2-2, them getting the equaliser at the end, we’re still the team winning at that point and we’d take that going into the end.

“Going into the penalty shoot-out, the gaffer said to us, ‘lads, all the pressure is on them’, and it was really.”

Here’s how fans reacted to Grimsby 2-2 Man Utd (12-11p) with Amorim in disbelief, Mark Goldbridge and AngryGinge gutted…

@SSE_LTFC: Enjoy every moment lads

@The_Fenners: If the home stands aren’t a sellout on Saturday I’ll be disappointed. It’s the very least those players deserve!! UTM #GTFC

@jaseharvey2: How much did Sesko cost @ManUtd? £60 odd million? Our own youth product who cost us nothing, Cameron Gardner, 19 years of age may I add, gave him a lesson on how to run the line. The kid was immense. Played with no fear. Master stroke by Dave Artell 👏 🙏 #GTFC

@ewangtfc:

The cost of Grimsby’s starting eleven tonight isn’t even £150k. Sesko cost enough to finance Grimsby for 13 years. Unreal. 👏 #GTFC

@jaseives: If I’m honest I’d fallen out of love of football a few years back.. watched but felt like a chore… not just tonight but this season.. the approach.. the mentality.. you can’t help but buy into it. It’s refreshing. And it’s Grimsby. #gtfc

@sab_89_: Grimsby gets a lot of shit for being a shit hole, but you know what, it’s our shit hole, and we just knocked Manchester United out the cup. UTFM. #GTFC #mufc

@markjamestattoo: WHAT A RESULT We maybe small in stature but we played against Man Utd tonight, held our own and beat them. Every single player played with the hearts of lions and we can be all so proud of the mighty Grimsby Town #GTFC ⚫️⚪️ @officialgtfc #GRIMUN

@GullandUtm: Absolutely still full of adrenaline after last night unbelievable night under the lights So proud to be 🖤🤍 #GTFC

@LewisWBudd: I don’t think there is a manager – in the world – big enough to take on the Manchester United job. It looks like a poisoned chalice. It’s been like this for about a decade now… Seriously, who is there that would be competent enough to stop the rot? #MUFC #GTFC

@Hilly4141: I really hope people come back and watch this team! Because they deserve the support! The roar, the passion and the whole stadium last night wow, 🤩 #gtfc
