George Baldock’s cause of death has been confirmed after an official word from the inquest and postmortem examination.
The 31-year-old Greece international and Panathinaikos defender, died on October 9th, 2024, by drowning in his swimming pool in Athens, as confirmed by an inquest at Milton Keynes Coroner’s Court.
Greek police also found no evidence of criminal activity, and no drugs or alcohol were found in his system, but a post-mortem noted a large heart, potentially making him susceptible to heart arrhythmias.
Baldock, who previously played for MK Dons and Sheffield United, was discovered in his pool in Glyfada, Athens, and could not be resuscitated.
Tributes from the football world, his family and friends followed, with George described as a beloved father, fiancé, and person, noting he was set to celebrate his son’s first birthday the next day.

A very large heart meant that he was susceptible to heart arrhythmias, where the heart beats too fast, too slowly or irregularly.
Tom Osborne, the senior coroner for Milton Keynes, ruled that Baldock’s death was an accident.
Baldock had played for Panathinaikos (vs Olympiacos) just three days before.
As per Daily Mail, Baldock had his regular training session on the day he drowned in his swimming pool, with teammates expressing their shock outside his villa following his death, which came less than 12 hours after they last saw him.
It’s believed that he had been deceased for approximately five hours before being found at 10:30pm.
He trained with his teammates on the morning of his death, and following the training session, he travelled 13 miles from the training facility near Athens’ international airport to his rented villa by the beach in Glyfada.
His partner, back home in the UK, tried speaking to him on the phone, but he was not answering. After becoming worried, she contacted the owner of the five-storey property, who found George unresponsive in the swimming pool.
At 10.29pm, the owner called the emergency services, who arrived at the scene nine minutes later, with paramedics trying to resuscitate the footballer, who was declared dead shortly afterwards.
A medical examiner was also called to the scene, finding no bruises or injuries on his body but was showing signs of having drowned.

“We are heartbroken with the sudden passing of our beloved George. We can confirm that a post-mortem examination has found that George tragically drowned whilst swimming in the pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens,” a statement from Baldock’s family read at the time.
“George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate and person. Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands. We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son. You were due to fly home today for us to celebrate his first birthday together, but instead we mourn your loss.
“As a family it has been incredibly touching, but equally so very difficult to read the huge number of tributes written by those that knew George and from those whose life he touched. It was impossible not to love him. We ask that you please continue to respect our privacy at this devastating time as we begin to process our grief.”
In a heartfelt gesture, Greece’s national team players have decided to share their Nations League promotion bonuses with the family of the late George Baldock, following discussions with the Greek FA.
It is also thought that Panathinaikos are considering paying the remainder of Baldock’s salary to his family after his tragic death.
Sheffield United had discussions have occurred between themselves and Panathinaikos about a potential friendly match in Baldock’s honour, but scheduling conflicts due to Panathinaikos’ Champions League commitments have delayed plans, with the hope to find a future day that suits both.
