We take a look at the favourites to become new West Brom manager with Carlos Corberan set to leave for La Liga club Valencia.
Reports confirm that Valencia has triggered Corberan’s release clause, which is around £2.8 million, and he is expected to sign a contract with the Spanish club until June 2027.
This comes after Valencia sacked their previous manager, Rubén Baraja, due to poor performance in La Liga.
Corberan’s expected departure has been described as a significant blow to West Brom, where he had been highly successful, leading the team to a near play-off spot in the Championship.
On Monday (23 December) Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “Carlos Corberán, set to sign as new Valencia head coach until June 2027 as replacement for Baraja. Release clause over €3m triggered and Corberán will sign for Valencia in the next 24h.”
The morning after, John Percy wrote: “Update to story from last night. Valencia have now made an official approach for #wba head coach Carlos Corberan. Talks ongoing and accelerating but not done just yet.”

Valencia have made a formal approach to #wba for Carlos Corberan. Talks ongoing. Not yet a done deal but this is a very tough job for Corberan, who grew up 20 miles from Valencia, to turn down: https://t.co/oJgfN6VjJv

Twitter users gave their reaction as the list of favourites to become new West Brom manager is revealed, with Carlos Corberan set to leave the club…
@harryrestallwba: Has to be cooper for me, Took forest from relegation candidates to the prem in one season, 2 play off finishes with a not fancied Swansea team! Be almost a perfect replacement on a free #wba
@sjpatel212: A few years ago, Brentford took a relative punt on an unknown Thomas Frank who has been pulling trees since. I’m sure the names of Mowbray, Robins, Cooper etc will be linked but I’d be 100% behind taking a bit of risk on someone we’ve never heard of, but the owners believe in #wba
@Warren_Stephens: Whatever anybody thinks about playing style, CC took over a #wba squad who had yielded 50pts in their previous 46 games & we’ve averaged about 75 per 46 since. He improved multiple players (e.g., Furlong, Kipre, Mowatt, Grant) & will be an incredibly difficult act to follow.
@djbaggie: Well let’s hope all the Corberan haters are happy now! Personally I am gutted to see him go, he has been a tremendous manager, during a difficult time for the club financially. I can only thank him and wish him well. And to the haters say “be carfull what you wish for “ #wba
@BaggieFans: So it’s the morning after the night before, the king is dethroned. However, a club like Albion cannot be successful if we go 12 years straight of sacking managers. Carlos is only the third manager this century to be poached and, whilst we grow, this is the model for success #wba
@CameronHarris07: Good manager Carlos and I wish him all the best, but the meltdown down some fans are having is way over the top. We didn’t have any success under Carlos, and I truly believe if he stayed we wouldn’t have made the playoffs. 3 wins in 14🤷🏻♂️#WBA
@BigBobFootball: I understand people are saddened by Corberan leaving but he’s wanted to leave us for a long time look at the amount of jobs his agent has tried and failed to get him. We got a good compensation fee for him and the bloke was NEVER going to us promoted! #wba
@martfully: My feelings on Carlos leaving are primarily ones of sadness. But I think that the owners have an opportunity here to bring in ‘their own man’. It’s a tough gig to take on, but there will always be people wanting managerial roles. Steve Cooper for me, but will be interesting #WBA
@floydy1983:
1. Steve Cooper
2. Mark Robbins
3. Tony Mowbray
4. Russell Martin
Would love Potter or Moyes but we don’t have the pull for them #WBA #TheGlobalSearch
@Ricks86L: @CarlosCorberan I don’t know where to start. You took us from a club with no hope to eternal hope. You brought back the atmosphere to the Hawthorns & you brought back the belief when so many of us had lost it. You will be a tough act to follow. Thanks for everything CC 💙🤍 #wba
@BAGGIEBAIL: #wba Didn’t think I’d be spending Xmas eve clicking refresh for news on Corberans departure 😕
@HurricaneHic147: Personally think Carlos will be a huge loss to us & not sure we fill that gap with someone as competent! You only have to look at players he’s transformed during in his tenure – Grant, Bartley, Kipre, Mowatt the main ones who’ve benefited from his coaching… #wba
A class act, who will be tremendously hard to follow. But a fantastic opportunity for him and I personally thank him for leaving out club in a massively better state than when he arrived and wish him well. #wba @CarlosCorberan #COYB
