Fans react as Sheffield Wednesday confirm replacement for the departed Danny Rohl

Fans react as Sheffield Wednesday confirm the replacement for the departed manager Danny Rohl with Henrik Pedersen in charge.

Earlier this month, Henrik Pedersen, was reportedly ‘in line’ to become the new Sheffield Wednesday boss, and he was the preferred choice from the squad’s perspective over Danny Rohl.

Henrik Pedersen, who saw his contract expire at the end of the June and was linked to being as part of Brentford’s new coaching staff under new boss Keith Andrews, was expected to step up as boss once Danny Rohl’s inevitable exit was ironed out.

Henrik Pedersen headed out to St. George’s Park to join the squad with pre-season training underway ahead of the 2025/26 season fast approaching.

But then Danny Rohl returned to the club, and after a few weeks, then announced his exit.

He is described by The Star to be a popular member of the team at Hillsborough, is well-liked amongst the players, so much so that he’d be backed if he were to be chosen as Rohl’s replacement long-term.

Now Rohl’s gone, Pedersen is named as the new boss, but boy does he have a challenge on his hands, with the club still in crisis, players potentially going on strike after being informed that July’s wages will be late.

Andy Giddings tweeted: “It’s believed he’s turned down opportunities at Brentford and Strasbourg to sign a 3-year-deal at Hillsborough.”

CLUB STATEMENT:

The Owls are delighted to announce the appointment of Henrik Pedersen as the club’s new manager.

The Dane takes the S6 reins with immediate effect.

Pedersen joined the Owls in October 2023 as assistant manager and was a vital part of the coaching team as Wednesday sealed Championship survival against the odds on the last day of the 2023/24 season.

He then helped steer the club to a mid-table finish in the second tier in 2024/25.

Pedersen brought a rich pedigree to Hillsborough, both as a coach and manager.

Following six years within the Red Bull stable, taking in stints with Red Bull Salzburg’s youth teams and Red Bull Ghana, Pedersen held a central role in forming a footballing philosophy for the entire Red Bull group.

The hugely successful spell with Red Bull Salzburg led Pedersen back home to the vacant managerial role at HB Køge.

The vastly experienced 47-year-old went on to become assistant manager of German side Union Berlin, before managing Eintracht Braunschweig, Stromsgodset in Norway and finally Vendsyssel FF in Denmark.

STATEMENT FROM PEDERSEN:

I am incredibly, INCREDIBLY proud to become manager of this wonderful football club.

Since arriving in Sheffield with my family, the city immediately felt like our home.

The people are what makes a city special, and the fans are what makes a football club special.

So to be now staying in Sheffield, and managing this club with its incredible supporters makes me very happy.

This club has a fantastic history, one of the giants of English football and it is now my job to help get us back to the position we should be in.

Is this going to be easy? No! We are maybe in ‘rough waters’ at the moment but as a proud Dane I can tell you that like our Viking ancestors, stormy seas don’t bother us too much. You have to get used to it, to weather the storm to get to calmer waters.

This is a really great club, with great fans and I will do anything and everything to help us thrive and grow. We will have to fight and battle for everything but with the right mentality we can achieve great things as a team.

To the fans, I ask that we stick together. At times we may need to be a little patient as we strive to grow. We all care deeply and will do all we can to bring the great times back to Hillsborough.

I only ask that you get behind your team.

Sheffield Wednesday is a massive club! I now look forward to the hard work of preparing the team.

From the youngest kids in our academy, right through to the first team. I look forward to seeing you all for the new season.

See you all soon.

Henrik

Pedersen told swfc.co.uk when extending his contract as assistant manager on July 7th: “When the opportunity presented itself and the chairman asked me to extend my current contract with the club, I didn’t hesitate.

“It’s no secret that my family and I have fallen in love with this great club and also this wonderful city that has made us so welcome.

“The fans are what carries a club through tough games, good times and bad. And our supporters are the best!

“I’m excited to continue my role at the club and getting back to work supporting the team and working with the great group of players we have.

“To the fans, I look forward to seeing you all again soon!”
