Fans hit out at Shrewsbury as manager leaves weeks after his comments on re-structure

Fans hit out at Shrewsbury Town as their manager Steve Cotterill leaves after his comments a few weeks back on a surprise re-structure.

FootyInsider report the new board have decided to part ways with Cotterill as they plan to bring in a new boss ahead of next season.

The 58-year-old was appointed at the League One outfit two years after he departed Birmingham.

As per Shropshire Star on the 7th of May, Cotterill revealed that he found out about the appointment of the new football board at Salop when the announcement emerged online the same time as everyone else.

He said: “When did you read it? That is when I read it.

“This answer is no, I cannot shed any light on it.

“That is the honest answer, someone sent me a link, maybe I am not that important.”

When questioned about his future at the club the boss added: “I don’t know the answer to that.

“There is a restructure going on and I do not quite know what that entails.

“So I don’t know. The football season now has finished and I need to have time to take stock of all of it and maybe see my family a little bit.

“I should not be answering that question should I.

“There are enough other people who could answer that question.”

Shrewsbury finished in 12th place in League One last season with 59 points from their 46 games.

Cotterill was in charge of Shrewsbury since November 2020 and took charge of 117 matches, and spent a long period of that spell in charge very ill with battling life-threatening Covid.

This season, he managed 54 matches across all competitions and led them to 20 wins, eight draws and 26 defeats and averaged 1.28 points per match in League One.

As mentioned, fans hit out at Shrewsbury as manager leaves weeks after his comments on a re-structure…

@AaronLucifer: We’re all going on a league 2 tour @shrewsburytown #salop

@BristolOli: Someone will be very fortunate – crazy decision

@MattSummerhill: Harsh. Ran out of steam (injuries, I believe) by the time we (SWFC) beat them at the end of the season but they looked really useful at Hillsborough. Would suggest 12th in L1 is a decent season for a club of their size.

@Damon_Morris_: Best manager tactically in my time watching #salop Last season was a great achievement. Kept us up from his hospital bed in his first season. Wish him all the best. May not be everyones cup of tea, but hes a winner and had that sharp edge this club lacks at times. Shame.

@Damon_Morris_: Paying off a good manager with one year left is a really odd way to save money. Some may not have liked Steve. But he had an edge to him the club lacks. Best manager in my time watching tactically. Shame its ended. I think we may have achieved something next year.

@CharlieBass18: That’s bonkers

@Rogerjc1965: Relegation next season

@martindudley20: Wrong person leaving the club, RW May have his supporters but high time he stopped alienating everybody he befriends, from Sayfritz to Cotterill and everybody inbetween – time for a new chairman and fresh investment and fresh ideas

@SalopianMarkH79: Who can blame him. He’s done a fantastic job, we were League 2 bound before he saved us. For all the good Roland has done for the club, it is now painfully obvious it is time for him to go.

@Richard84185456: This is awful

@danbevan76: Hope this decision bites them back. Comfortable mid-table finish last season won’t be easy to match.

@callum1512_: What a horrific decision that is #salop

@Allthe77s: Usually when our managers leave, the grey cloud goes with them. But this departure leaves the cloud over the club. This feels like a hugely frustrating decision.

@RichP62152866: Once again RW kneecaps the club when we start showing promise.

@LHEvans28: The news I was hoping not to hear. 😢

@Alexjm05: Suspect this has been in the pipeline for a while really, especially if SC hadn’t been made aware of the changes behind the scenes at the back end of the season. All quite acrimonious really and a poor end to an otherwise relatively succesful season for the club #Salop

@Northern_Shrew: Terrible decision by the club, and Shrewsbury have a patchy history when it comes to choosing managers…. Steve is such an experienced manager who has done it at a higher level and really got the team playing as a unit
