David Artell jokes about beating ‘the pigs’ but also makes heartfelt speech on the situation Sheffield Wednesday find themselves in.
League Two Grimsby Town advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup for the first time since 2001-02 after defeating Sheffield Wednesday 1-0, Jaze Kabia scoring the decisive goal from a Reece Staunton corner.
Many Sheffield Wednesday fans boycotted the game, with Grimsby bringing around 6,000 fans to Hillborough, and the confirm attendance announced at 9,424, due to issues with owner Dejphon Chansiri.
A young Sheffield Wednesday side, who saw 10 changes to the lineup, struggled against a dominant Grimsby side.
Grimsby boss David Artell expressed sympathy for Sheffield Wednesday’s fans, while Sheffield Wednesday’s coach, Danny Pedersen, praised his young players’ development and performance despite the loss.
Grimsby boss and Rotherham lad David Artell joked about his satisfaction in beating ‘the pigs’ last night.
But his heartfelt speech about seeing Wednesday in its current state was the big takeaway.

“The emotion tonight, it was brilliant, but the stadium was, what, a quarter full? It wasn’t the same as beating Manchester United. But we still found a way to win and the lads deserve a huge amount of credit.”

Sheffield Star report that when Rotherham-born Artell was asked of his affiliations in his post-match press conference, he joked of his satisfaction in beating ‘the pigs’, then shifted his focus onto the situation Sheffield Wednesday find themselves in.
Artell said to The Star: “It’s a huge club. Nobody wants to see this. Not one person of any heart or morals wants to see what’s going on at this football club. You saw it with Morecambe a few weeks ago and it’s happened with other clubs. Not one person wants to see this and I really, genuinely feel for the fans.
“Football clubs are at the heart of a community, make no bones about it. You might change your wife or your partner, but there’s very few things you change in life. It’s your football cub, maybe your bank account. Even family you can fall out with, but your football club? You never change, ever. When you see this place as it is, It’s sad.
“I grew up in the late 80s and 90s. When this football club got to those two finals (FA Cup and League Cup in 1993), I was 13. I remember it, a big football club, huge, packed out every week, a hard place to come in the top division. It’s a brilliant football club and nobody wants to see it like this, in a distressed state. In that sense it gives us no pleasure to beat a football club in this state.”
When asked who he wanted to face next, Artell said: “I’m not particularly fussed, because the thing is, I could sit here and say I’d like to go to such-and-such a ground.
“I’ve never been to Spurs yet, which would be lovely, but then the footballing gods might give us, I don’t know who’s left in, Millwall, Port Vale, I don’t know.
“So the good thing is that we’re in the hat and we’ll see what happens.
“To get to the last 16 of any competition, regardless of who you face, who you don’t face, is a terrific achievement.
“The fact that it’s not been done for 24 years shows that level, if you like, of achievement.
“So the players deserve a huge amount of credit for the consistency of their performances.
“Both in the league and in this competition, it’s not been easy. We’ve had a League Two team, a Premier League big boy and a Championship team.
“That’s not an easy run. Nobody can say we’ve somehow had the footballing gods in on our draws or something.”
Pedersen said to BBC Radio Sheffield: “I’m proud of what they have done. We have played three cup games on a really, really good level.
“The boys have showed who they are and expressed themselves in the best possible way. It was a very even game in the beginning – we lost the first ball and the second ball but the boys worked their way into the game.
“George [Brown] up front was really, really strong for us. We saw Jarvis [Thornton], we saw Sean [Fusire] and Ernie [Weaver] and Cole [McGhee] – and we saw Yisa [Alao], 16 years old who came in after 35 minutes. Big respect.
“They have to develop quick because they will get playing time.
“I’m disappointed that we have lost, but behind this loss I’m again really happy for the performance from our young guys.
“In the big picture now I’ve seen three cup games with our young guys and when I look back from when we started the pre-season and to see where all the young guys are today, then I can only be proud of this development.
“Tonight I think we played a very equal game against a really good Grimsby team and our boys showed that they can also, in a game like this, make a really good performance.”
Twitter users reacted after David Artell jokes about beating ‘the pigs’ but also makes a heartfelt speech on Sheffield Wednesday…
@GrahamBurns81: has he been taking lessons in unprofessionalism from Wilder?
@civetta: I thought that was pathetic, tbh, whatever else he said.
@stoney_s6: Rotherham lad says it all really
@ShaneEales1: Just scraped past effectively an under-21 side where a 16 year old was one of if not the best player on the pitch. He can get satisfaction where the Rolling Stones couldn’t 😂
@CeeJayMilner: Bit pathetic really from a bloke his age
@davo33uk: Did you tell Poor bloke they didn’t play United 🤦🏻♂️🤣🤣
@Jonny_swfc_: Any need for the pigs comment? Even Wilder doesn’t sink that low. And the pigs thing is between us and United, embarrassing when Rotherham try and get involved.
@alexmerrill1: Well done for his first team beating an U21 team with some teenagers in 👍🏻
@barmyowl1212: Showing his level of thickness there isn’t he. Should have asked when was last time he enjoyed blue and white bacon?
@MaryJHinge: Even when trying to be classy they can’t stop the mask slipping for a second.
@SamNevin98: Queue Wednesday fans being more bothered about a manager making a joke than the plight of our club. We’ve got some fucking fanbase 🤣 #swfc
@Madowl123567: Classless by him unprofessional and his team beat a under21 team and was poor too.
