Coventry City mark what is a momentous weekend for the club by hitting seven past a woeful QPR side to boost the Sky Blues’ hopes.
Coventry had been 5-0 up at half time, exploiting QPR’s defensive errors under new boss Julien Stephan, then went on to thrash Queens Park Rangers 7-1.
Haji Wright, Jack Rudoni, and Victor Torp each scored twice, plus one from Brandon Thomas-Asante, to send Coventry up to 3rd in the Championship, unbeaten in the league and two points behind Stoke (1st) and Middlesbrough (2nd). It was just a consolation goal for QPR’s Richard Kone in the 91st minute. QPR sit 22nd with 1 point.
The win comes just hours after the club confirmed the purchase of the Coventry Building Society Arena, marking a “pivotal moment” amid their recovery from past financial woes and the years of being homelessness.
It also coincides with the 20th anniversary of the first match at the stadium, a 3-0 win over QPR in August 2005.
After the 7-1 humbling at Coventry, QPR head coach Julien Stephan told BBC Radio London:
“I can promise one thing: it will be a completely different game next week against Charlton. We will react for sure next week.
“We did a lot of mistakes today. It’s unacceptable. We will think about the next week and how we can react.
“This is a big challenge. This is the first time in my career I have to deal with a score like this, but in football you learn a lot.
“I just want to promise that next week it will be completely different and you will see a completely different team.”
Coventry boss Frank Lampard was a happy man after seeing his side hammer QPR 7-1 on the day the club completed the purchase of the Coventry Building Society Arena. Here’s what he told BBC CWR after the game:
“It’s a great day. This club has a great history and tradition and been through so many things. To make this feel our home is really special.
“I’m delighted for everybody. We have this officially as our home. Then the onus was on us to put in a performance and the boys certainly did that – from the first minute.
“It was a performance of quality, mentality and attitude. They were at it in every single way.
STATEMENT BEFORE MATCH:
Coventry City Football Club is delighted to announce that it has completed the purchase of the Coventry Building Society Arena from Frasers Group, marking a pivotal moment in the club’s history.
The announcement comes in the week of the 20th anniversary of the Arena’s opening, a stadium that has played host to two decades of Sky Blues memories, from unforgettable victories to moments of resilience and unity.
For the first time since the ground was built, the Club now owns its home. This milestone secures long-term stability, safeguards the future, and opens new opportunities for growth on and off the pitch.
Doug King, Chairman and Owner of Coventry City, said:
“Today is a defining day for Coventry City Football Club. For too long the question of stadium ownership has cast uncertainty over our future. By bringing the Arena under the Club’s ownership, we are safeguarding not only the present but for future generations. This is our home, and it now belongs to the football club and its supporters.”
“This is more than a transaction. It is a statement of ambition and belief in Coventry. The Arena will always be a symbol of our city’s strength and creativity, and as owners we can invest in facilities, fan experience, and wider opportunities for our community. We are proud to finally call this stadium our own.”
“On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank our supporters. Through years of uncertainty including times when we had to play in other cities and towns, your loyalty has been unwavering. This moment is as much yours as it is ours.
“I am also grateful to Frasers Group who have negotiated this agreement in good faith and I wish them well for the future.”
Frasers Group Owner Mike Ashley said: “Doug King has been a pleasure to work with and he is a fantastic custodian of the club. With him at the helm, I am sure Coventry City FC has every chance of becoming a Premier League club soon.”
Today’s home match against Queens Park Rangers will mark another poignant chapter. Fittingly, QPR were the first visitors to the Arena in 2005, and this weekend they return as Coventry celebrates not just an anniversary, but a new era of ownership and ambition.

This is how fans reacted as the Coventry mark a momentous weekend by hitting seven past a woeful QPR…
@Wedgbury: a near perfect display, us conceding has annoyed me more than it should do. #PUSB
@NickJH83: Unbelievable this, absolutely unbelievable. I’ve just driven back from holiday on the isle of Wight so was listening to radio 5 live, what a brilliant drive this was. One of the greatest days this in the club’s history, given the news earlier too. Play Up Sky Blues!
@nattiecw: What a day! Pinch me I must be dreaming. A great day to be a Sky Blue! Wright and Torp were absolutely outstanding today and as for Rudoni – wow! #PUSB @Coventry_City @BBCCWR
@davidcollinscv4: I still can’t get my head around the fact we own our own stadium, I don’t think people understand how big this is. Every single penny that stadium makes is straight back in to the club. Apart from 1987, I think this is the biggest day in the clubs history. #PUSB
@PuneetVatish: I love how many fans of other clubs have congratulated us. They’ve shown that football is more than just rivalries. It’s about the love of the game and justice. Shout out to @ntfc and @BCFC. Without you we wouldn’t have survived 🙏🏽🙏🏽. #PUSB
@mozccfc1987: Well I guess if you’re gonna miss a game…miss a good un !…What a day it’s been. I might not have been there today but I can’t stop smiling. A proud day for all Sky Blues ! ##PUSB

@ArcticDonkey: So I’ve missed two games whilst on holiday, and we have scored 12 goals across them both. I’m meant to be going Millwall midweek so everybody needs to expect a boring 0-0 it seems 😂 #PUSB
Protests. Sixfields. Jimmy’s Hill. Tennis balls. Plastic pigs. Pitch invasions. Relegations. Administration. Points deductions. St Andrew’s. Banners. Empty stands. NOPM.
We made it through it all.
Now we have a home.#PUSB pic.twitter.com/OUCEczghIQ
