Chris Wilder ended up getting sent off for kicking a ball at a fan then Southampton produce a comeback to beat Sheffield United.
Ross Stewart scored twice in the second half to secure a 2-1 victory, overturning Tyrese Campbell’s first-half opener for the Blades.
There was also a controversial decision to disallow Sydie Peck’s last-minute header, further frustrating Sheffield United fans.
The result means that the Blades suffer a 7th Championship defeat of the season, sitting 24th with 3 points from 8 games. Southampton, who pick up their first away league win of the season, meanwhile, are 14th with 10 points from 8 games played.

As seen in the clip above, Wilder could be seen going off the pitch frustrated, and smashed the ball into the crowd, hitting a home fan.
The manager went over to the supporter to apologise before then being shown a red card by referee Adam Herczeg.
Southanpton got one back in the 51st minute when Armstrong’s header from Ryan Manning’s corner came back off the crossbar and Stewart netted on the rebound low into the bottom corner.
Stewart then turned the game around with a brilliant second goal seven minutes later. He turned away from two defenders 25 yards out sent it into top right-hand corner.
Sheffield United tried to get one back, chances were saved, then in the 90th minute, a goal was ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper.
Sheffield United assistant manager Alan Knill speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield after boss Chris Wilder was sent off at the end of the first half.
On Peck’s late disallowed goal:Â “We don’t think there is too much contact with the goalkeeper. He has gone for the ball and missed it. He has misjudged the flight of the ball and Peck has got the goal. They’ve seen something to make that decision.”
On Southampton’s penalty:Â “It is a great first touch that commits Cooper, but I think Cooper is pulling out. Like any experienced striker does he puts the legs into him. Then it is up to the referee to make the decision. We don’t think it is a penalty but he made the decision. It set the tone.
On Wilder getting sent off:Â “It is frustration about a lot of the decisions. Then when we are coming off the ball is there and he goes to kick it off the wall and hits it into the stands. He is disappointed and was the first to say sorry to wherever it landed.”
On performance:Â “I think we have found the right positions but what we need to do is execute. Out of possession, we looked really good and solid and looked dangerous on the counter attack. You know the opposition is going to have the ball and you have to keep you shape and you’ll get the chances.
“Tonight gives a lot of positives. When we walked in it was bigger than we thought, we underestimated it. The players have been really good.
“The performances have been okay, not where we want to be but getting there. We were nearly really good tonight. A few more games of finding a shape we are comfortable in and we’ll get there.”
🗣️ “We’ve watched it back… They’ve seen something, and made that decision”

Southampton boss Will Still talking to BBC Radio Solent: “I am delighted. I am delighted for the fans who travelled up on a Tuesday evening. I’m delighted for the collective, I’m delighted for a few individual performances.
“To go a goal down, against the run of play to an avoidable one, was frustrating and then missing a penalty was all set up to make us think ‘here we go again’, but we did the opposite.
“We showed relentless energy and attitude to get back into the game with a good set piece and then to win it with a brilliant strike from Roscoe [Ross Stewart].
“We have come away with a big win, and an important one as well and the sense of a job well done. It is the reward for the last week to 10 days of performances which have had frustrating results.”
Here’s how social media users reacted as Chris Wilder gets himself sent off for kicking the ball at a fan then Southampton comeback to beat Sheffield United…
@therealemjaypea: Only one thing for Sheffield United to do. Sack Wilder, give it 7 weeks, sack the new guy then get Wilder back.
@FG_utb2: Anyone in the replies who thinks this is even a yellow let alone a fuckin red, should never complain about a manager being a robot again. I guess you all want boring cunts who dream about tactic boards in their sleep.
@lfc_chloe56: Hits a ball better than Wirtz
@dazz20: Why kick it into the crowd that was always gonna happen, blokes an idiot
@aroundgroundsss: Unsure as to while he’s volleyed it? Your a manager of a championship club not a Sunday league side. But also not sure why it warrants a red card? Strange all round this
@AmadMackem: not a fan of of him, but this is pathetic. He said sorry, obviously didn’t mean it.
@Bettyblack74: To be fair thats a better hit than the team have managed so far
@DougDexta: Cant stand Walloper Wilder but to be fair to him it was clearly not intentional. Since when was the football an offensive weapon 🤷‍♂️
@AJK_86: Awful ref in this game, wants to be the star of the show no doubt.
@Jacob97106277: How’s that a straight red tho? He’s a prick but no way he’s getting sent off for hitting a fan by accident then apologising 🤣
@theFFM_: I’d get him in the squad with a shot like that on him
@JamesBarber7: Stupidity at its finest that. Given that wanker of a ref a reason to send him walking
@littlewood88: No secret that I have no love for this club or Wilder but I have to defend him a little here, I challenge anyone to see a ball bouncing up like that and not putting their laces through it whilst screaming “Sheareeeeeerrrr’” or “Rooooooonnnneeeeeyyyyy!”
@FFanatic1889: How stupid. He apologised, clearly the fan is fine so we move but ref has over ideas 🤦
@kasha2014: I love him! Least wilder has passion when we’re winning and still isn’t happy! He apologised straight away. Ref is such a toss pot
