Scunthorpe manager Andy Butler accuses Wealdstone of refusing to play on after injury
Scunthorpe boss Andy Butler told BBC Radio Humberside: “Their players refused to come out. The referee wanted them to come out and the league wanted them to come out, but they refused to come out, for whatever reason.
“From discussions [they felt] the players weren’t in the right mindset after seeing a player get injured.
“I’ve never seen it twice in a row. The one at Eastleigh was completely different. Player safety is paramount. It was a head injury and I 100% agree with it.
“This wasn’t a spinal injury, it was a shoulder injury – it popped out and has popped back in now. I remember popping my shoulder on this field and walking off.
“I’m not saying the players exaggerated it. I have to be careful, but I know my players would carry on.
“My players were professional and exemplary in the way they conducted themselves to make sure they were ready for the restart of the match. I’m proud of my team.”
He said: “If it doesn’t stand, it sets a precedent further down the line for every game – if you’re not getting the result and are down to 10 men and used your substitutes, you go off and refuse to go back on the pitch. They’ve forfeited it by refusing to come out.”
Butler on Bourne’s handling of the situation: “He 100% wanted to get the game on. He had no issues but had to follow procedure.
“He had to go inside and ring the league to see what their stand on it was, ring the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) to see what their stand on it was, and they said they must return to the field.
“I wish him (Nkrumah) all the best. A shoulder injury is not nice, I’ve had one before, but the condition is different.”
Twitter users gave their reaction as Scunthorpe v Wealdstone gets abandoned following a lengthy suspension…
@harryparker____: Still all stood here like lemons. Lad has been off the pitch 10 minutes. Absolutely no reason to not continue this match. What the fuck is going on @NL_Enterprise. Stadium staff just came in exec lounge at the iron, told @WealdstoneFC players refused to come back on the pitch. Claiming stress and mental issues as a result of the injury. Andy Butler knows what to do anytime we get an injury and are losing. Never seen anything like it..
@Max_Bell_11: No matter what the decision is / was, @NL_Enterprise need to come out with a formal statement *tonight* about the Scunthorpe vs Wealdstone game. The fact that there still hasn’t been a public announcement about Tuesday’s game, is simply not good enough.
@Ironknut: @NL_Enterprise dangerous precedent set today, any match where a player gets stretchered off is now abandoned right? No major concern to the player from own players, hope hes OK but both sets of players warming up, then Wealdstone walk off and somehow match doesn’t restart!
@Matthew611J: butler came on the tannoy and told us it was not the refs decision- the manager of Wealdstone told the ref his players were not fit to carry on for mental health when they weren’t even bothered – warming up at the other end- it’s a joke
@christiansufc: Wealdstone manager wanted it abandoned. They point blank refused to come out. @NL_Enterprise need to fine @WealdstoneFC and give us the win. We stayed out for the whole 45 minutes. Their manager wanted it called off and told his players to stay in the dressing room.
@sophlegg: Wealdstone players disappear down the tunnel the moment their player (with a shoulder injury) is lifted up on the stretcher & refuse to come back out?! Meanwhile our players spend 25 minutes warming up. Madness 🤷🏼♀️ @NL_Enterprise sort it out
@YorkyIron: Looked like a shoulder injury. Wealdstone players went into the changing room and refused to come back out. Andy Butler took the microphone and explained the decision wasn’t the referee’s. Unprecedented scenes
@Darren_Reevell: Just listened to AB post match presser. It’s clear that despite being told by the ref and the league, the Wealdstone players refused to come back out. Surely that must be a clear breach of rules!
@shaymenfans: Hope everything is ok @danielnkrumah28 all the very best from @FCHTOnline fan 👍🏼💙
@AC3_Gaming85: Just been confirmed on the radio that your players REFUSED to come back out to finish the game, hope the National League throws the book at you, I’d be embarrassed & ashamed if this was my club
