Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone clashes with Liverpool fan and walks out of press interview

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone clashes with a taunting Liverpool fan and walks out of his press conference interview.

An entertaining 3-2 win for Liverpool was marred, Virgil van Dijk scored yet another late winner, Marcos Llorente’s goals had cancelled out early efforts by Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah, then Diego Simeone got sent off.

Chaotic scenes unfolded in the 92nd minute with the Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone having to be pulled away from the crowd after getting into an argument. The red was reportedly for foul and abusive language.

A 1:05am on Thursday morning the fan in question reposted the clip alongside a comment that read: “Do I get the assist?”

Then he called out Simeone’s official page, mentioning him in a post with a GIF of David Brent and his trademark catchphrase: “Ooh, you’re hard.”

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone, speaking to Uefa: “The truth is that it was a beautiful game, in a fantastic stadium in front of an incredible crowd, against a team full of great players.

“We had our weapons and we gave our all to take the game in the direction that we wanted and I think we were dangerous.”

On what he expected from the game: “They [Liverpool] are a brave team, they showed that last season in their play, they competed well in the Champions League as well. We have our weapons and we arrived here with the aim to make a good game.

“We know that these games are long. The bench helped to recover what happened in the first moments and then what happened, happened.”

On the incident: “When they scored the third goal he turned around and insulted me. I’m a person, I’m human.”

When asked to clarify what happened in the press conference, he declined.

Liverpool fan who clashed with ‘coward’ Diego Simeone issues a video statement on what happened

“I am not really going to get into the exact nature of the insults. I don’t want to get into that discussion. I know what went on behind the manager’s bench. I cannot solve society’s problems in one press conference. I have to live with it because it happens all the time.

“They always talk about taking care of each other, but they insult you throughout the entire match and you can’t say anything because you’re the manager.

“My reaction was unjustifiable, but do you know what it’s like to be insulted for 90 minutes, to turn around after the opponent scores and still be insulted? It’s not that easy.

“[The referee told me] he understood me. I hope Liverpool can improve that aspect and that when they identify the person who did that, there will be consequences.

“There were insults throughout the match, including gestures. It’s clear that I’m the one who has to stay calm, I have to put up with the insults, the gestures and any situation. Because I’m in a position where I have to put up with it.

“I’m not really going to get into the exact nature of the insults. I don’t want to get involved in that. I have got to stay in my place, I know what went on behind the manager’s bench.

“I can’t solve society’s problem in one press conference. I have to live with it as it exists all over the place all of the time.”

UEFA will await the referee’s report before deciding on any possible sanctions following Simeone’s red card.

Former referee Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez said to radio show El Larguero: “I think Simeone will receive a fine of €20,000 (£17,358), which, in quotes, is the least.

“It’s most likely that he’ll get a one-match ban, and it’s also most likely that they’ll put him on standby.

“What does that mean? If he’s a repeat offender during the year, he’ll have to serve that [extra] ban, but for now, he won’t have to.”

In Article 63 of UEFA’s regulations, a passage states: “As a rule, a player or team official sent off by the referee is automatically suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition (i.e. UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League or UEFA Super Cup).

“In the event of a serious offence, the UEFA disciplinary bodies are entitled to augment this punishment, including by extending it to other competitions.”

Arne Slot, speaking on TNT Sports on Alexander Isak’s debut: “Yeah, particularly because in the 60 minutes he played he seemed to be quite fit to me. It wasn’t as if after 10 minutes he was already very tired. He could play at this level quite well after one or two weeks of team sessions.

“So that was the thing and he can play football and that he’s a joy to watch and that is not a surprise to me. He was fitter than I expected but the fans can’t get their hopes too high. We play three times a week and that’s a bit too much for him still.

“We have two great number nines and we’re going to use both of them throughout their career here.”

Slot, speaking on TNT Sports: “If you want to beat a team like Atletico which has an unbelievable mentality, you have to beat them with their weapon as well and that is mentality and that is what we showed again today that we can beat them with mentality.

“I think we should’ve made it easier for ourselves, at 2-0 first half we got more than a few chances to make a third. At 2-1 second half we hit the post, we were so close a few times and if the margin is only one goal something can always happen and it happened, A little bit deflection I’m not sure but second ball went in, but again we showed mentality because in that 10 minutes that still had to be played we were pushing, pushing, pushing and we scored a set-piece goal.”

On if complacency crept in after going 2-0 up: “It can but it didn’t happen too much with us this season that we were 2-0 up after six minutes, but it is clear that if we feel and need urgency then we are unbelievable and now we need to make sure we feel this urgency for 90 minutes. Don’t even look at the score just feel this urgency every second.”

Slot on his side scoring late again: “You’re never 100 per cent sure [if you’ll score] but what I do know is we’re so fit that we’re able to push one more time. But I’m sure that we’re not going to need, every single game, stoppage time. What I can assure you, even if we don’t score it, we will try to push for it.

“That is the mentality this team has, but it should not only be about mentality. It’s also how fit we are and how well prepared we are.

“Throughout the last few weeks [the fact] that they are able to push one last time and then in the end it is also about quality because the cross from Szoboszlai and the way Virgil heads the ball in is not only to do with mentality or being fit, that is also [about] having so much quality.”

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, speaking on TNT Sports: “We try, we kept pushing for the 3-1. We concede the equaliser, massively deflected. It was not great. We found a way again. We were dangerous in our set-pieces anyway, they were pretty aggressive I must say. I’m glad I got the winner.

“They’re a team that never gives up, they have quality players that can punish you if you’re not there in a split second, if you’re a little bit too late and they punished us before the break and after the break we try to go for the 3-1. They get a bit of confidence from that as well. But we have to keep going and show the resilience we’ve been showing for many years and it was another great European night here again.”

On if the team always believes they’ll find a way: “I think we showed many times that we are capable of doing it. Today I was the lucky one with the winner and we move on.”

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson, speaking on TNT Sports: “We need to get back to winning a bit simpler and easier. The assistant manager turned to me when Virgil put it in and said he’s getting too old for it, so I can’t imagine what the fans are like. It’s a great thing to have, being able to keep going until the end. When you’re 2-0 up and playing so well in the first half it should’ve been a more comfortable night.”

On his goal: “I was just trying to get in the line of the keeper, so he couldn’t see. It’s a great finish, give me the Puskas award now! But no, honestly I didn’t know anything about it. It was a great start and thank goodness it went in.

“We’ve got a lot of new players, they need to settle in. Playing for a big club like this isn’t easy. They’ve all done really well. They’re the future. They’re the ones going to take this club forward. They’ve shown glimpses and they’re only going to get better.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone clashes with a Liverpool fan and walks out of his press interview…

@scottygfc: Grown man

@niall_quinn_: Picture this. Amorim gets the sack. They fly to Madrid and say name your price and he comes. Fernandes scores an 88 min winner and Simmeone goes over to the same scouser and just stands there.. ears cupped.. box office

@AndrewSMcHale: Nothing wrong with it. Be interesting to see if that bloke would have said anything to him on a 1 on 1 without people around him.

@willemb98: Definition of loves to dish it out but can’t take it

@RParry71457: Good on him, gives as good as gets an defends his side… but outcome… the scousers have give you it, except it an go home. there’s levels an we top of tree

@TomLiversage: The fans should be embarrassed, why can’t they just go to a game and enjoy it without abusing players and staff. I really can’t understand people that do that. Genuine idiots ✊🏻

@TaintlessRed: This lad might be in trouble as Simeone asked LFC to take action for insults during the game. Sticking fingers up at opposition and telling them to f off isn’t punishable 🤷‍♂️. The op says he spat though I can’t see that in video. Simeone provokes fans all the time himself anyway.

@Aashish_Shukla7: Would be interesting to know Jamie Carragher’s take on a guy spitting…

@PatByrned: Coach comes in a throws bottle at the fans. Moves away, comes back and spits at the fans. Scumbag

@MichaelBuckle17: Imagine one of our coaching staff had done that? Intrigued to know what rival fans think of this when Carraghers spitting incident gets brought up daily

@TheKopHQ: Major head losses by the Atletico Madrid staff. Fantastic to see 🤣
