‘Absolute shambles’ – Fans react to awkward Argyle TV issues after Plymouth lose to Leyton Orient

‘Absolute shambles’ – Fans react to awkward Argyle TV issues after Plymouth lose 1-0 to Leyton Orient. Tom Cleverley’s face said it all.

Josh Koroma beat the offside trap to latch onto Ollie O’Neill’s through ball and fired low past Luca Ashby-Hammond to seal all three point for Orient.

Fans booed Argyle’s players off the pitch come full time, with Tuesday night’s action seeing just Peterborough and newly-relegated Plymouth without a point after four games into the League One season.

Cleveley said after the game, per Plymouth Live: “You will probably tell by my body language I’m not as burning angry as I was on Saturday. I saw a group of guys who were focused, were organised, were trying their best. We just fell short and that’s where we are at, at the minute.

“The Lincoln and Barnsley performances were similar in terms of we offered attacking threat but conceded three really soft goals, and the Bolton and Leyton Orient performances were similar in terms of we looked a bit more solid and in control but that final part we were just off it tonight. Putting the two aspects of all those four performances together is what we are striving for.”

On the Orient goal: “Having watched it on the small monitor next to me it looked like a good decision. I will have to watch it back, it is a small screen and I’m obviously in the heat of the battle so I have not seen it back on a broadcast view or anything. It just looked like one that we maybe couldn’t complain about.”

“He certainly came in and made us more solid. He wins all his aerial duels, he’s no-nonsense, he has succeeded at the level last season so pleased with his debut.”

On any positives from the game: “I thought Benarous was fantastic in his first league start. Malachi has been our most consistent performer this season, excellent again, but we are just struggling to put both parts of our game together at the minute and it’s my job to try and figure out the balance of the team that is the best way to do that.

“Until all the business was done this window, we were trying to pick up as much points until we were a complete team. Now we have not managed to do that for one reason or another. We are all disappointed, we are all hurting but we all have to stick together.”

On the boos: “They pay their money, they can voice their frustrations. I think they have got the right balance of being demanding as well as not turning on their team, and supporting them.

“I have been there as a young player where it really can turn and it’s hostile, and it’s not easy to perform under those circumstances. I would say thanks for the support, keep being demanding as well as backing the team the best you can.

“We are suffering from confidence levels and when the opposition scores you can feel the environment getting hostile. That’s tough. We have got a really young group this season. It’s probably the first time they have experienced this.

“We have got a lot of players who are experiencing playing for a club that is expected to win. I had no doubt coming into this how big the job is. It’s a long, long process to get this team to where we want.

“We have taken on 11 new players, a lot of them young players. We have taken on four, five academy graduates, and we have taken on a really competitive league. I’m ready for the challenge, I’m ready to try and improve us day in day out.

“We will for sure strengthen in the (transfer) market further. I thought Alex looked a seasoned League One player and maybe we need a couple more of those. It’s a huge task we have ahead and we will meet it head on.”

Cleverley on supporting his players: “I experienced it on an astronomical scale when I was a player (at Manchester United),” he said. “I think I can guide these players through. Brendan Wiredu has had to do it and I thought he was one of our better performers at Lincoln.

“Listen, it can turn around as quickly as it can turn away, and that’s what we have got to believe. So emotional support, technical support, as well as external support from the market.”

On poor results: “I think there is a fine balance between demanding off the team when we are not performing at our best, and absolutely they deserve to do that. They pay their money.

“I have been in environments that have gone toxic. I would never use that word for this environment. I think it’s demanding, I think it can be high pressure, especially if you have not experienced it so I need to help those lads emotionally and through this, but I would say we are a club that needs a result, that’s for sure and hopefully that comes Saturday (against Blackpool at Home Park).”

When asked about the possibility of more new recruits before the weekend, Cleverley said: “I think that’s a question for others. It takes a lot of my time, but as does everything else in the football club when you are on a run like this.

“I think that’s why we have recruitment departments because that is their main focus, and fingers crossed because you can see we need the help from an environment point of view, from a fans’ point of view, but I think tonight you saw we need it from a quality point of view.”

Orient’s Richie Wellens said: “It’s something we want to do better – when we press high and we win the ball high we can play the ball forward quickly. It was a great pass for the goal and a great finish.

Fans react to awkward Argyle TV issues after Plymouth lose to Leyton Orient…

@NikArgyle: The people running this club are an absolute disgrace. Making more money than any point in our history and forgetting that the first team is the main attraction. Invest in it appropriately or sell up.

@WelshboyMatelot: Player sales, most, if not all season tickets renewed and more sold. Evergreen money every month. Merchandise, revenue from the stalls (stuff not exactly cheap in them)…… so, where is all the money gone. We could have had 3 number 9s out here tonight, wouldn’t made a diff!!!!

@ACosmicGrief: Absolutely dreadful. Players don’t care, management with no ideas or inspiration. Lack of any leadership from the top & a poor squad. Club statements on fan behaviour, the fans who spend a high % of their income expecting to see a professional team. The board should be ashamed.

@MumbaSZN: @SimonHallett you’re silent when we are abysmal, but you take all the glory when we’re doing well, leave the club

@TomSagee: All this talk of a number 9, means fuck all when there’s no link between the defence and attack, Houghton and Wright walk into this team, chucking a teenager on trying to chase the game, unbelievable how far we’ve regressed since we were last in this league. Hallett out

@Ollie_Haggart: Utterly incredible how this club has been driven into the ground in such a short space of time. Honestly, you couldn’t have deliberately sabotaged it and come away with it being any worse than it is. Shameful

@jcdpafc: As one of the “happy clappers” I’ve defended Hallett when most didn’t, but this absolutely cannot go on. We are in absolute freefall, Hallett needs to see sense and use the money he’s holding onto to bring in serious experience. The ship is sinking fast

@RichDoidge: Every single player needs to look at themselves, absolutely embarrassing. Cleverley too, this is what the board get for yet another inexperienced appointment. You couldn’t even pass to a player in front of you tonight, utterly pathetic. Even the happy clappers drowned out tonight

@richgranville: @SimonHallett I’ve been watching argyle for over 40 years, through the highs and lows. This is one of the worst times I can remember. This needs to be fixed and fixed quickly. We are an embarrassing joke of a club.

@VinceRennie: Absolutely pathetic! @SimonHallett I hope you are listening to the crowd tonight… WHERE IS THE MONEY???? We have brought in no where near enough quality. This is quickly becoming the worst argyle team ive ever seen with a top 6 budget apparently. SORT IT OUT!!!!
