8 goal thriller as Coventry score 3 times in 7 minutes to beat Derby 5-3

There was an 8 goal thriller at Pride Park as Coventry City score 3 times in 7 minutes to beat Derby County 5-3 on Saturday afternoon.

It took just 7th minute, for the hosts to go ahead. Victor Torp’s free-kick came off Bobby Thomas, who then gave the Sky Blues the perfect start.

On 12 minutes, Dazid Ozoh won Derby a free-kick, Callum Elder curled a beauty into the top corner to level the scoreline.

A penalty was awarded to Coventry on 25 minutes, Ephron Mason-Clark brought down in the box and Haji Wright stepped up and made it 2-1.

Then it was Derby who had a penalty, Ryan Nyambe sent in a cross from the right, Bobby Thomas went up and the cross struck his hand. Thomas complained he got pushed by Matt Clarke, that was ignored by referee Anthony Backhouse. Carlton Morris stepped up and made it 2-2 on 45+2 mins.

A great start for the Rams in the second half, the ball fell to Ebou Adams and he volleyed it low into the corner to put Derby in front.

Coventry made it 3-3 on 72 minutes, a long throw from Milan van Ewijk found Bobby Thomas who climbed highest and his header bounced back off the post. Brandon Thomas-Asante however was quick to react and put the ball into the net.

The goals kept coming, Coventry were ahead on 75 minutes, Milan van Ewijk with a superb cross to the back post and Ephron Mason-Clark scored with a fantastic header guided into the bottom corner.

It was 5-3 Coventry on 79 minutes, Milan van Ewijk went forward, down the right and he laid back into the path of Victor Torp, on the edge of the box and a strike went into the bottom corner.

Derby boss John Eustace told BBC Radio Derby:

“Really disappointing to lose. I was proud of the effort of the group again. They were 100% committed. But we needed to be a lot better, especially when we go 3-2 up.

“We’ve got to defend the box better. It’s something we haven’t done well enough during pre-season and in the first couple of games. It’s something that we’ve got to keep working on.

“That’s not what we’re all about. We’re always hard to play against, always defend the box for our lives – this is our DNA. In the last two games we just haven’t done that well enough.

“The positives to come out of the game were three goals – to go behind twice and come back showed great character. So we’ve got that fighting spirit, we’ve just got to be better in both boxes.”

Coventry boss Frank Lampard told BBC CWR:

“If it’s not my favourite game since I’ve been here then it’s right up there because of the character and quality – we kept playing and kept pushing and showed belief.

“We won at a place a lot of people are going to find really tough. We were really sharp against a back five that don’t give you any space.

“I’m just really pleased with the players. They have to have the belief at 3-2 down. An outstanding game from us.

“We scored a couple of real quality goals and I think that quality from us was the difference. The players were fantastic.”

@ConnaChahal: Went from League 1 to the Prem in 7 mins we’re so back

@HasanHussain777: 3 goals in 7 minutes! Fantastic part of the game for Coventry City! Not ideal that we conceded 3 goals but got the job done and 3 points to take home #PUSB

@PUSB_PUSB: One CB away from greatness for the 3rd season in a row

@Dec_Chalmers: Absolute carnage, Championship is well and truly back.

@NickJH83: Five of the very best! What a performance, what a win, what a three points. It’s a super Saturday alright!

@Mouse_Mat: Gotta love that, 4 points from a possible 6. Snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Generally the better team all game. Dog shit ref. EMC or Torpy for me as MOTM. Rushworth not convincing #PUSB

@MattPUSB: Undefeated start 👏 defensively shocking today. Keeper looked shakey from crosses but still glaringly obvious we need players in to improve. Time to spend some cash Doug. 3 needed at the minute. Possible 5 by next week. Positives we took our chances 🙌 #PUSB

@joesharpyyy: i understand we’ve got injuries but jake rooney must be sat watching sanderson and batth absolutely seething, both a waste of time, concede 8 in 2…. crap crap crap signings no point #dcfc

@ClaireMcBarnet: 8 goals in 2 matches conceded is not a good look. How long until Langas and Nels are back?

@woodwardio79: Vickers is better than Zetts. Ward is better than Jackson. Rooney is better than Nyambe. My nan is better than Sanderson. We need players back, wingers, a CM, & full backs in the building or more days like today will keep happening. This team is worse than that under PW #dcfc

@samnaylor92: Nothing will change at this football club until that leach Stephen Pearce is fucked off. What a fantastic window he’s produced eh #dcfc #dcfcfans

@dcfc_connor: We should of prioritised Nat Phillips dion and bath are wank. Cant rember having a worst defence here we played with 3 cb and still conceded five #dcfc #dcfcfans

@Alex_Lipniski: That squad can’t defend when it’s asked to defend. Taken two games of the Clarke, Batth, Sanderson backline to work that out . I get Wilson, Langas and Beck change the complexion of how we defend entirely, but we can’t go, right we can’t get any points til theyre back #dcfc
