Prior to the game, police had been monitoring a large group of drinkers who were in Weymouth since the morning which kick off at 1pm.

Officers were watching a group of people who were inside The William Henry (Wetherspoon) pub in St Thomas Street and were also congregating outside the venue, at the junction with Westham Road, reports Dorset Echo.

One onlooker said about 30 men, some wearing football shirts, were standing outside the pub with others chanting inside the venue.

A number of police vehicles arrived in area as officers monitored the group who then moved off about 11:30am and were escorted by police as they headed down Westham Road, towards the stadium.

Residents said that Frederick Place was cordoned off by police following what was thought to have been a fight with one man saying: “I was on my way to work about 9.30am and I saw a huge crowd of lads. A lot of police were arriving. I saw one person on the floor. I assumed there had been a punch up.

“You see things like this at night but at that time of the morning it was shocking to witness. There were six police cars and two riot vans.”

Facebook users Stephen Jamie said: “If anyone on here was involved in the aftermath of the game with your appalling behaviour by the car park you should be ashamed at yourselves.

“The abuse being directed at myself and my 1 year old boy and my 5 year old boy is totally unacceptable.

“We got trapped amongst the weymouth fans as we left when our own fans were trying to cause problems with the weymouth fans. We were continually abused by our own fans until a few individuals recognised me and told everyone else to stop.

“A green flare was also thrown that landed on me and my 1 year old who was asleep in my arms.

“You “supporters” involved are a total disgrace to our club and should stay away. Your support is not needed if you act like this. Your a disgrace.

“The majority of these individuals are never seen at any other game and looked to be out to cause problems.

“Thank you to the police officer, lady who walked me and my boys around this chaos and shame on the people involved.”

Social media users gave their reaction with Yeovil fans accused of trying to cause trouble after the match at Weymouth…

Janet Foley: They don’t really come to watch football or support their team, they just come looking for trouble…. How juvenile and pathetic…. One day they will perhaps grow up!!!

Steve Spearing: Police thought it would be a good idea to let them out first so that they could hang around waiting for the home fans. Dorset Police for you..

Karl Harmsworth: Pathetic game you don’t see this with rugby

Kim Clark: Let my child out then locked me in 🤷‍♀️ Could have gone very wrong imprisoning people

Scott Kendall Chant: Dinlos right oustside old bill station you’d thought there main boy would of researched the area a bit moor before kick off instead of handing himself in after the fight not good but shows Yeovil’s fans mental age

Jason Hughes: Been to A LOT of games, but first time I have seen Home fans kept in and away fans let out first!. Mad decision by police, if you doing that then move them on.

Julie Appleby: Set the dogs on them.

Lee Drage: Why does this not surprise me…? 🙄😒 xxxx

Paddy Buckler: Racist cowards and they held us in the ground 🤬🤬

Keith Dean: 🙈. Idiots. You don’t get this problem with proper Games like rugby or should I say even women’s football much more enjoyable to watch. Stupid thugs. Bit of beer and theytake on the world

Graham Bugler: Hope the cost of policing this is not coming out of my council tax. I hope the clubs involved pay for it. I attend several Rugby matches at Exeter, the fans are mixed all have a beer if they wish and I’ve never seen a problem yet or any police in attendance. Why can’t football be the same?

Lisa-jay Bond: Not real fans more like numptys on the beer on a jolly in the name of football

Lee Brown: Bizarre that a bunch of grown men can act like bellends because they’ve gone to watch 22 kids kick a ball about some grass??

Kallum Gethins: Always the same with Yeovil ain’t it 😬
