‘We’ll definitely be fine’ – Gary O’Neil expresses belief in Wolves after late comeback at Brighton

‘We’ll definitely be fine’ – Gary O’Neil expresses belief in his Wolves side after a surprise late comeback at Brighton on Saturday.

Wolverhampton Wanderers rescued a late 2-2 draw at Brighton to claim a much needed point after a dismal start to the 2024/25 season.

Danny Welbeck put hosts ahead in first half, before Evan Ferguson doubled their lead in 85th minute and looked set to pick up all three points.

However, Rayan Ait-Nouri pulled one back for Wolves on 88 minutes, then Matheus Cunha smashed in a 93rd-minute equaliser to send the away end wild.

The result sees Wolves climb up to 19th in the Premier League table, on 2 points from 9 games but are still winless while Brighton are 5th with 16 points from the same amount of games played.

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil, speaking to Sky Sports:

“I am very pleased. I thought we were by far the better side and created loads of chances.

“We were aggressive, but at 85 minutes when they scored their second goal, I thought I was going to be stood here answering some more tough questions about how you played quite well again, but it’s another defeat.

“I’m delighted for the players and the fans. The players have given so much, and I know it cannot always look that way because the results can cloud things, but they’ve given an awful lot.

“If you keep doing that, it can’t continue to go against you. We were due a break and due something to go our way, and today we kept going.

“I’m a little bit disappointed with myself really that I started with a five [at the back]. I know we did well with a five against Manchester City and the lads deserved another go at it.

“But I didn’t think a five would fit very well against Brighton today but at least we were quick enough to change it at half-time.

“At 85 minutes when Brighton scored their second goal I thought I was going to be stood here answering some more tough questions.

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil to MOTD: “We were 2-0 down and didn’t deserve to be but we’ve said that too often this season

“It did feel like it was going to be another one of those where I was going to have to stand here and talk about [another defeat]. But the lads haven’t shied away from any challenge.

“Today showed that if you give everything it can’t consistently go against you.”

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler said: “With the second goal, I had the feeling that we were too passive, that we were going to have this consequence. We conceded an easy set-piece goal, then we had the chance to make the third goal and they made the equaliser from the transition.

“We have to quickly learn from this because we were not mature enough. We were not professional enough to win games like this. I know it’s still a young team with a lot of potential, but we have to learn quick out of experiences like this.

“That’s football, and football is sometimes brutal. We experienced it in a bad way, so we failed. Now it’s important to stay positive, to find positive things, to stay together. In these moments, when you fail, you can show your character, you can show your personality, and that’s what I expect now.”

Here’s what Twitter users said as Gary O’Neil expresses belief in Wolves by saying ‘we’ll definitely be fine’ after late comeback at Brighton…

@wolfiereedy73: Bit of luck with deflected equaliser, but overall & especially with 2nd half performance totally deserved point. Player higher up pitch with more aggression 2nd half. Players defo still playing for GON 🖤🧡👍 #wolves #wwfc

@Phil_Hough: Cut out the individual errors and we will see a transformation in Wolves fortunes. Sa poor kick for the 1st, Forbes poor pass for the 2nd and AIT nearly giving BH a 3rd. The upcoming fixtures on paper look easier but in the prem nothing is easy especially if you gift goals. #wwfc

@Janderson1394: Great, still sack him though

@mitchdavis_1: Still got to go. This just shows that we have the players to comfortable move away from the bottom but not the right coach

@Gman2307: Great to see some fight but the first half display was very under par. Still a lot questions to be asked and not sure if this is papering over the cracks? Next week is decisive point in the season.

@dinglette1972: I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it. Supporting Wolves should come with a health warning 😅. The last five minutes have raised plenty of smiles, but I still stand by that GON needs to go! See you at Molineux 🧡🖤 #wwfc

@Hursty63400254:
Turning point in our season.
Win the next 4 we are mid table.
Great to see the fight in the team in the last 10 mins.
Yes there are a faults but really good to see the lads fight back and not give up

@formalwolvesfan: Two goals in 3mins! What a dramatic end to a PL game of football!! A draw that feels like a win. Hopefully this will be the start of our good luck run. Gary just saved himself a game today 😜

@808Slates: HUGE point on the road!! Players showed real character 2nd half still frailties on show but never the less important point and comeback give those players some confidence and GON living to see another day going into the next 2 must win games. Season finally starts here #wwfc

@salopwolf: A point & first come back from a two goal deficit for a couple of years certainly makes you feel better, still concerned & not convinced with the coach, too safe & predictable first half, second half more brave, handbrake off & much better, chaotic at end but enjoyed it #wwfc

@RyHoops83: Reflecting on yesterday. Any time you get a draw at Brighton is a good result and in context of the late show even more so. Much of the game was tough to watch imo but we are all hoping the Doyle intervention is a turning point/sliding doors moment of our season. #wwfc

@gjp12775: Didn’t listen to the game, but all accounts, it was quite a comeback. It may have been one that gives a stay of execution for GON. It”s still interesting that Jose Mourinho commented on not minding managing a team at the bottom of the PL, and he’s a Mendes client.

@JoeJones3387: Let’s be honest if not for Tommy Doyle it would have been 3-1. We didn’t deserve that. Got lucky. And that can’t overshadow a terrible game. We are so far off it this season
