Jon Champion and Ally McCoist ended a mad day of World Cup football commentating on Croatia’s win over Nigeria, but the game was so dull that they began to discuss about the stadium being built on a swamp.
Early in the first half, Jon brought it to Ally’s attention that “the stadium is sinking”. He added “I don’t mean right now as we speak, but evidently the whole stadium is slowly sinking. It was built on a swamp.” Ally then replied with “so by the end of the match we’ll be pitchside?”.
Certainly something you never hear during a football match!
The match was played at Kaliningrad Stadium, which opened as early as April, prompted local authorities to develop the island which for many centuries had been a wilderness, left largely untouched.
The island’s soft clay protected water-bird colonies from the port city’s industrial development.
It cost €257 million to build and will most likely have to be demolished after the World Cup has finished.
The 35,000-capacity stadium is one of the smaller venues in the tournament but will host four group stage games:
Croatia v Nigeria (16th June)
Serbia v Switzerland (22nd June)
Spain v Morocco (25th June)
England v Belgium (28th June)
