Footage has emerged which appears to show Vincent Kompany allegedly calling Liverpool’s Mo Salah a ‘pussy’ after his nasty challenge on him.

Following the incident, Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness voiced his anger: “On another day it’s a red card.

“He does catch him slightly. But he’s off the ground and endangering an opponent, and that sometimes is viewed as a red card by referees.

“The referee would know that Vincent Kompany is not that type of player anyway.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also spoke of the incident: “I really like Vincent Kompany but how on Earth is that not a red card? He is the last man and he goes in.

“If he hits Mo [Salah] more he is out for the season. It is not easy for the ref and he may not see it how I see it.”

Kompany however backed himself up, stating after the game: “I thought it was a great challenge, was it not?” Kompany said asked in his post-match interview.

“I got the ball, a little bit of the man but it wasn’t naughty. I didn’t try to injure him. It was that or let him go through on goal.”

Manchester City went on to end Liverpool’s unbeaten run of 20 matches in the Premier League with a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane. Roberto Firminho with the equaliser in-between City’s goals.

The victory blows the title race wide open with Pep Guardiola’s men just four points off the Reds in first. Tottenham are just six points off the top.
