VIDEO: Charlton friendly abandoned as their opponents walk off the pitch following ‘distasteful scenes’

Charlton Athletic were left surprised yesterday after their first pre-season friendly against Romanian top-flight side Gaz Metan Medias ended up being abandoned.

Addicks midfielder George Lapslie had given his side a 1-0 lead in the first half, though just minutes into the second had been given a penalty and that is when things turned sour.

Valentin Cretu and Marius Constantin from the opposition side reportedly man-handled the referee, who then showed red cards to both.

Charlton state in their match report: “Unhappy at the decision, the visiting staff urged the referee to let them simply sub the offending players off, something which the Addicks were happy to agree with, but the referee insisted in playing to the letter of the law, resulting in Medias withdrawing their players and the match being abandoned.”

Charlton made light of the situation with Lyle Taylor ending up going to take and score the penalty with the game (originally planned to be a 70 minute match) already over.

Following the game, manager Lee Bowyer said “It’s disappointing and never nice to see. Rightly so, the referee stopped the game.

“It would have been good if we could have got a game that was a bit longer, but overall I’m happy because we got a bit of a run around.

“Thankfully now, for us, it’s better that it’s ended this way so we can do a tough double session tomorrow.”
