Torquay become only club in top five tiers to not have sponsors on their new kits

Torquay United have become the only club within the top five tiers of English football to not have sponsors on their new kits.

The National League side deliberately intended to do just that and it’s certainly got plenty of talk around the world, they have also got an ‘updated version’ of the crest to go with it which features just the arrows and years 1899 and 2019 marking the club’s 120th anniversary.

In the space where a business would normally have a logo on a football shirt, the Gulls have instead proudly placed the year they were formed, as can be seen below.

The Gulls’ CEO, George Edwards said, as quoted by DevonLive: “It was a tactical decision not to have a sponsor,” said Edwards.

“The 120th Anniversary shirt, with the ‘1899’ logo, was such a success and, on the back of that, it was an ideal opportunity to use it again and as a potential brand going forward.

“This has helped to put Torquay United on the map. We are picking up more supporters around the world all the time.

“The aim going forward is to put the club in a marketing position which it has not enjoyed before.

“Pro:Direct are the leaders in worldwide web promotion of their products, and there was a natural progression in working more closely with them.”

The kit on the far left made it’s debut in a recent pre-season friendly against Bideford where Torquay ended up winning 5-0.
