Things keep getting worse for Sunderland

Pre-season for Sunderland hasn’t got off to the best start as they kicked it off with a 1-0 loss to Darlington at Blackwell Meadows last night although they did take on and lost 2-0 to Dundee in a training match in Portugal last week.

The only goal of the game came from Jordan Nicholson’s which was enough to secure victory for the National League North club.

Sunderland nearly levelled on 40 minutes with a header by Donald Love from a right wing corner that hit the post and was cleared.

New manager Jack Ross spoke after the game: “First of all, you’re disappointed to lose any game – pre-season friendly or competitive games – and that’s the kind of mentality we are trying to create within the group.”

“We were very poor in the first half hour, very passive. Darlington played it like a competitive game and we played it very much like a friendly.

“Thereafter I thought we were OK. In the latter part of the first half and the early part of the second half we were OK without being good.

“We’re still a way away from where we need to be at, but I understood that when I took the job. You can see that from where we are squad-wise in terms of numbers.

“There are a lot of factors at the moment that are preventing us getting things together as quickly as we want to.

“We need to improve lot on what we have seen tonight to be ready for the first game.”

It’s been rather depressing times for Sunderland and their fans, after suffering relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2016/17 season – only to go and do the same from the Championship a year later.

The new owners have told fans everything they want to hear but it’s the performances on the pitch that shows the real reflection of how much they have fallen.

The Black Cats kick off their League One season in three weeks time and the window closing earlier than usual, they’ll need to improve huge amounts in a short amount of time.

Take a look at how Sunderland fans reacted to the result along with some mocking from Newcastle fans on the next page.
