The secret two-word nickname Newcastle players gave Steve Bruce just before his sacking

The secret two-word nickname Newcastle players gave Steve Bruce just before his sacking has been revealed and it’s made many laugh.

Newcastle’s players apparently began listening to sound-bites from Bruce’s media interviews in his final few months at the club, as they began to pick up on some of his mistakes.

At least one member of the squad privately referred the manager as ‘Mike Bassett’ after his many press conference ‘gaffes’, the Athletic claim.

As many know, Bassett was a hapless England manager in one of the most famous footballing comedy films of all time.

The pet name, therefore, reflects poorly on Bruce – whose job practically became untenable towards the end, with his exit confirmed earlier this week.

The 60-year-old was not only facing apparent jibes from some Newcastle players, but supporters had also firmly turned on him.

The club’s fanbase chanted loudly against his management in their last home game, as they fell to a 3-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle have earned themselves just three points from their first eight Premier League games, which leaves them in a precarious position.

Bruce had tried to get Newcastle playing with a more positive style this season, but by doing so he sacrificed some of the side’s defensive qualities.

For whoever replaces Bruce at Newcastle, the first task will now be to guide the club away from the relegation zone with the owners desperately not wanting to see them fall back into the second tier. Wouldn’t be a good look now would it?

Meanwhile, with the secret two-word nickname Newcastle players gave Steve Bruce just before his sacking revealed, Allan Saint-Maximin wrote a heartfelt post on the departing boss.

In a message on his Twitter account, the 24-year-old said: “You are, without a doubt, one of the most gentle people that I have ever met in the world of football.

“You have been a man of your word, a caring man and a fair man who never hesitated to protect us. I will never forget how you treated me, for that I will be forever grateful.”

Steve Bruce has admitted it was tough being called ‘a tactically inept cabbage-head’.

“By the time I got to Newcastle, I thought I could handle everything thrown at me but it has been very, very tough,” Bruce told the Telegraph following his dismissal, while also conceding at 60 years of age that Newcastle will probably be his last job.

“To never really be wanted, to feel that people wanted me to fail, to read people constantly saying I would fail, that I was useless, a fat waste of space, a stupid, tactically inept cabbage-head or whatever. And it was from day one.

“When we were doing ok results wise, it was ‘yeah but the style of football is rubbish’ or I was just ‘lucky.’ It was ridiculous and persistent, even when the results were good.

“The best one was to be told we were a relegation team in all but points…this was all in the first season. We finished 13th. It [the criticism and abuse] got even worse in the second year. We finished 12th, 17 points clear of the bottom three.”

FAN REACTION:

@DC_1878_: Bet them players won’t be there though when they start splashing the cash , bruce just got a 8m payout hes got the last laugh trust me

@cliveprentice: That dressing room needs a good clear out

@JohnSmi34911236: Bit rich coming from the sh1te players @NUFC

@CHIBearsBurner: Those same players will be getting replaced in January so they might wanna be nicer to the new gaffer

@chlcrk: Yeah but did Steve Bruce ever start a press conference saying he’ll play 4-4-fucking-2? Would’ve been quite the tale if he did tbh #nufc

@DominicR26: Someone in that changing room is a right little grass. Funny because they’ll probably be getting sold to Burnley in January

@Dara_MUFC: Those players have some nerve. The only one that has a bit of Respect is Saint Maxim. Steven Bruce is 100x the player and manager any of them will ever be

@FactsRafa: Even the players thought he was a joke I suppose that’s the fans fault and Rafa’s fault it couldn’t possibly be the fault of the man that came across as a managerial clown 🤡

@RobJGaston: Say more about them than Bruce. Everyone bar ASM be playing in the championship soon anyway. With Newcastle or without them 😂

@NA1F_A55AF: Same vibes as when our players started mocking Emery’s English behind his back during training. Disgraceful behaviour

@ianiansymes: Mike Bassett was an excellent manager who was pilloried by the press unfairly. The exact opposite of Steve Bruce in every way.

@BairdzyNUFC: Hahahahhahahaahahahahahahhahaaah nah I can’t that’s fucking finished me off 🤣🤣🤣

@thebrandonlocke: Gotta feel sorry for Bruce, not a good manager at all but received no respect at all, especially since the takeover

@ScottHo14019746: #NUFC players calling Bruce Mike Bassett just tells you everything you need to know about what they thought of him.

@Man_about_Toon: Harsh on Mike Bassett to be honest. Managers don’t lose the dressing room like this because the fans are against them, or because they have a tight budget. This only happens with a bad manager #NUFC

@Dan_Omegawebby: Least Mike Bassett had tactics
