Russell Martin frustrated over Ryan Manning’s disallowed goal as Southampton lose to Wolves

Russell Martin was left frustrated over Ryan Manning’s disallowed goal as Southampton lose 2-0 to Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

@PLMatchCentre tweeted: “#WOLSOU – 12’ VAR OVERTURN – Manning’s goal was awarded on-field.

“The VAR deemed that there was a foul by Fernandes on Semedo in the build-up and recommended an on-field review.

“The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a Wolves free-kick.”

Southampton boss Russell Martin speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “It’s football and it’s about how we respond. We started the game badly with two mistakes leading to their goal. We’ve dominated the ball, limited them to eight shots at home and lost 2-0. I would expect us to get something and we didn’t.”

On Manning goal being ruled out: “I think it’s open to interpretation. Semedo doesn’t try to play the ball. he puts his leg across him and then there’s contact. We were expecting a penalty. It is what it is. It’s disappointing when you’re on the end of two tough calls. We should have done better. We have a lack of punch. We have to create.

“We need to work really hard to try and improve.”

Southampton boss Russell Martin, per Sky Sports: “We should do more with the ball. To come here and have as much as we did, is not easy. We should not take that for granted.

“To be in the final third as much as we were, I would expect us to have something to show for it. It is not good enough. We were made to pay for individual errors.

“I liked the response. We played really good football until we got there. There has to be more. The only thing I am disappointed with is that we did not create more.

“It is not enough. We can’t just turn up and fight. The team is not built for that. It builds up to get to the final third so they can do their stuff. It just did not come to enough.”

When asked if he felt his job was secure following the loss, Martin added: “What will be, will be.”

Alan Shearer said:Southampton had a lot of possession but struggled to do much with it. I thought it was a really harsh decision to disallow their goal. The referee made the decision and what happened to the high bar and referee’s call? It wasn’t a obvious error and I thought they were really hard done by.”

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Pleased for the group. They’ve given a lot and played better than we had today and came away with nothing. it was a gritty performance. Southampton are an awkward side to play against. We had to be patient. I thought we were excellent in the second half.

“We spoke a lot about this week about everyone being responsible. We did a lot of work on out-of-possession stuff. Half-time came at a good time for us and we could tweak it. It was a big clean sheet and I’m pleased for Jose Sa. He’s had to work hard since Sam Johnstone came in.

On Cunha: “He’s huge for us. He has such ability but he is one of those players who drifts and takes up positions. We work very hard on him on how it is to be a trusted team player when we don’t have the ball. He’s worked very hard on it after I spoke harshly to him after Brentford away. A big win for us and Matheus Cunha had a big say in it.

Change in performance: “Brentford was a big mark for us. We went there and we were miles below our level. We should have got something off Man City here and then we’ve gone three unbeaten. It’s going to be a big fight for us but we know we can turn it around.”

Fans reacted with Russell Martin also frustrated over Ryan Manning’s disallowed goal as Southampton lose to Wolves…

@ahyden95: I’ve seen this since and I think this is really really harsh on Southampton. I’d be livid if it was against us. VAR is a cancer on this sport.

@nmoreland2: You just have to laugh. What the fuck is this horseshit? Not given on the pitch and the VAR thinks there’s enough to force the decision to be reviewed. Football is a washed sport, literally completely ruined #SaintsFC

@NorthamMonkey: We’ve been cheated out of this game by PATHETIC refereeing… that was more ‘clear and obvious’ than our goal. Awful league #SaintsFC

@sridout92: Footballs dead. No other reason to disallow that other than corruption. Fuck this league #SaintsFC

@1mewy: VAR is there to correct wrong decisions, if they can’t do that there is no point in having it. Today is not the first time it has cost us this season

@Neilos31:
Newcastle fan here.
That was absolutely shambolic.
Feel for you guys with that.
Either a soft pen by wolves player or a goal . No intent from Saints player there for me.

@SaintBourney: That’s an absolute joke

@ryan_rodwell: Can’t see a foul on the replay

@DarrenChurcher: How on earth was that ruled out.. just watched it again.. crazy..

@harrylong_19: On todays episode of VAR ruining football, what a fucking joke that is

@Too_Jazzee: Get fucked. That’s not a foul anywhere else on the pitch. Semedo has tried to block him off deliberate and all the incompetent fucks at PGMOL have bought it

@marz194_2: It’s borderline corruption when you watch this. Top level officials should NEVER get these wrong. With VAR giving multiple second chances to see it again That ref was a Maths teacher 2 years ago. Not being funny but how has the PL got to that!!?? Second ‘apology’ due. #SaintsFC

@Chi_Saintsfan: Fuck VAR. That’s not an obvious error. Absolutely ruining the game

@jamie_guce: i want to be clear. i DO NOT want to get relegated, by any means. BUT i fucking hate the Premier League, the VAR and all this bad luck we’re having. i miss the Championship #SaintsFC
