Patrick Bamford details a training accident which left Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa needing treatment from the physio department.
The Leeds player has stated that he was scared and wanted the ground to swallow him up after smashing a ball into Marcelo Bielsa’s face during one training session.
Striker Patrick Bamford spoke on the Peter Crouch podcast, and whilst he’s shown his finishing ability during the 2020/21 campaign, Bielsa apparently decided to stand in goal at Thorp Arch while the Leeds players were practicing their volleys.
Unfortunately for Bamford he hadn’t spotted his manager standing in the net, and that’s when disaster struck.

“There was one time this season where we were doing a crossing drill and he always positions himself in an awkward place,” Bamford recalls.
“The ball has come in and I’ve connected with it so sweetly on my left foot and it’s near the top corner, and he’s stood right inside the goal.
“I’ve not seen him and I’m not joking it’s come flush off the bridge of his nose. All I’ve seen is his glasses go flying about 10 metres and him holding his nose.
“He’s walked off holding his nose and I was like ‘sorry, sorry, sorry’.
“He’s gone ‘it’s nothing’. He’s walked past us about five minutes later to go and see the physio and he’s got a big cut on his nose.
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed when he’s doing an interview he’s using the same glasses and they’re not straight, they’re wonky. I feel bad, I should really get him a new pair but I’m scared to bring it up again.”
Thankfully for Bamford, it doesn’t seem like Bielsa held any grudges after the incident, after initially worrying about hurting the Argentine legend.
Bamford is fighting to impress Gareth Southgate that he’s good enough to be picked for the England Euros squad, starting regularly for Leeds, showing Bielsa is a big fan of his.
Bamford has earned Bielsa’s trust with his brilliant performance in his first season in the Premier League with Leeds.
The forward has hit in 14 goals to put him among the Premier League’s top goalscorers, not bad considering everyone shamed him and expected him to fail before the start of the current season.
