‘Over the top’ police at Torquay v Exeter slammed by fans

Police at Torquay United’s pre-season friendly against Exeter City at Plainmoor was slammed yesterday for being ‘over the top’.

The Grecians came out 2-1 winners in the Devon Derby thanks to goals from Tom Parkes and Randell Williams after Manny Duku opened the scoring for the Gulls on 13 minutes.

There didn’t seem to be trouble during the match though as reported by Devon Live, ‘many were left questioning the number of Devon and Cornwall Police officers operating road blocks in the area’.

Though @Brentcrude1 said: I was relieved they were there. Exeter have a violent and unpleasant element in there fan base. I was verbally attacked on my way to the ground but the police presence held back these yobs.

One eyewitness said as quoted by the media outlet: “Policing levels outside of Plainmoor are massively over the top for a pre-season friendly where no one was interested in causing trouble.

“In fact, police blocking roads but not actually having the knowledge of the diversion where people need to walk instead causing more problems as people kicking off at the level of overpolicing.”

After checking out how many police turned up to keep everyone in control at Torquay vs Exeter, fans took to criticise for how much of them were present, some of those tagging Devon and Cornwall police Twitter account – find out what they had to say on the next page.
