Neal Maupay responds to Kyle Walker’s claims that he taunted him about his children

Neal Maupay responds to Kyle Walker’s claims that he taunted him about his children when the two players clashed earlier this month.

It came in Brentford’s defeat to Man City, with Maupay continuing his antics of being a the latest wind-up merchant of the Premier League.

He opened up on recent clashes with footballers, first being James Maddison in Brentford’s defeat to Tottenham at the end of January.

And then he angered Kyle Walker, who accused Maupay of talking about his family, after Walker admitted to fathering a second child with a different women to his partner.

But now, in an interview with The Times, Maupay said that ‘everyone would laugh’ if they knew what he really said to Kyle Walker.

He said: ‘I didn’t think I should have to defend myself for something I didn’t do. The people who know me, they know I wouldn’t say something like that, but it is a bit unfair because if I don’t talk then people will think I’m guilty.

‘I’m not going to say [what he said], but, if you read my lips properly and find out, everyone would laugh.

‘People say footballers are boring, then all of a sudden a player does this and everyone goes, “Why, Neal? He’s the most disliked player. Blah blah blah”. For me, football is a game, it’s entertainment. I’m just having fun and, on the pitch, I’m trying to do everything to win. If I can say something that puts you off or makes you overthink and make a mistake, I’ll do it.

‘People don’t realise how much tension and emotion is involved at the highest level. I think it works quite well and if I can get a reaction, great.

‘It’s not personal and I’m sure I’ve never crossed that line. I try to be on the edge but I don’t say stuff about a player’s private life or their family.

‘People can judge who someone is from a 90-minute game, but what they see on the pitch isn’t real life. That’s why I’m not really worried about what they think. You could be the nicest player in the world and people would still find a way to hate on you, so I’m just going to keep being me.

‘Six years ago in the Championship I was doing the same thing, but because these are big stars, big teams, everyone is talking about it, but it goes both ways. The defenders can be cheeky with it as well. I’m not a crazy guy. We played Wolves last week and nothing happened because their centre-backs acted differently.’

Jeremy Freeman, an expert witness and forensic lip reader, shared his analysis of what Walker alleges Maupay said to him, though this has not been confirmed by any party involved in the incident.

He said Walker approached the 4th official and shouted: ‘I’m gonna knock him [Maupay] out’, to which Atwell replied: ‘Shush’.

‘However, Walker refused to back down and went on to say: ‘Wait there’ – pointing to the tunnel – before walking back over to Gillet.

Walker continued his rant, saying: ‘Ref, he spoke about my kids, he spoke about my kids, not once, but twice.’

Maupay interjected by saying: ‘I didn’t, it’s OK’.

Gillet tried to defuse the situation by saying: ‘Let’s deal with it at the end’ before turning to Maupay and adding: ‘Now, now, just calm down, listen to me… think about it, think about it.’

Maupay responded to Attwell by saying: ‘That’s a lie, that’s not fair, I promise you now.’

Maupay also copied James Maddison’s famous mock throwing darts celebration when he scored the opening goal of Brentford’s 3-2 defeat to Tottenham.

Maupay said in the interview with The Times: “He took it really personally, it’s funny.

“I threw a dart and he got so offended he posted my picture on his Instagram. But if I give a little something, I have got to be able to take it as well.”
