‘Mini tornado’ damages non league club’s dugouts causing match postponement

A ‘mini tornado’ damages a non league club’s dugouts causing a match postponement in the North West Counties Premier Division.

Members of Litherland REMYCA FC, who currently sit bottom of the table, arrived at their ground to discover carnage that a storm had caused earlier this week.

They had been use to host Padiham, currently sitting a place above them, with three points for either team vital despite it being this early stage of the season.

REMYCA have only picked up six points from 17 games played so far, whilst their opponents have 13 points from 16 games played.

However the much anticipated clash will now not go ahead and instead, will have to be rescheduled to to extensive damage caused to their ground.

Litherhead wrote via their official Twitter account on Friday: “At around midday a cloudburst and a freak wind lifted heavy athletics equipment across the pitch causing damage to the playing surface. Extensive repairs, required, Game postponed.

“Wind has blown the dugouts across the track and the large metal covers over the high jump equipment have been blown across the pitch. Not ideal.”

The club are yet to announce a new date for the game, but they have since reassured supporters that they hope to get parts of the stadium repaired as soon as possible.

Fans reacted as a ‘mini tornado’ damages the non league club’s dugouts causing a match postponement in the NWCFL…

@SnellSte: Jesus, that’s bad

@AwiAwi87: Thats awful, hope you get sorted soon!

@mattyjm2001: No non league club deserves this.

@kyle_lord2: hope things get sorted lads, some pretty nasty damage there ☹️

@STELEFTLEY: Crazy that isn’t it, we had to call coaching earlier today due to that storm, noticed another tornado hit near by the M58 today. Weird only few days after a tornado hit Widnes.

Harry Winfield: Such a shame to see

Paul Lewis: Jeez this doesn’t look good, thankfully no one was hurt

Jason Farley: The club should set up a GoFundMe page or something so we can help pay the costs, no club should go through something like this

Keith Halsall: Weather’s been atrocious this week, didn’t think it would be this bad though

Ben Saywers: Sorry to hear. Take your time with this if you are able to, don’t rush, weather sounds like it’s going to be miserable for the next week too

Tim Harper: Blimey what a blow for Litherland as if things aren’t bad enough already. They really don’t need this to deal with right now

Ian Sheridan: This storm really caused quite the wreckage didn’t it?! Hope you can get sorted sooner than later, fingers crossed for you guys

This reminds us of when another storm a few years back caused damage to other non league clubs’ stadiums.

In February 2020, Wisbech Town had their football stand crushed by Storm Ciara, with footage uploaded by the Northern Premier League Division One South East club showing off the damage that the Elgoods Brewery Fenland Stadium suffered.

The side hosted and lost 1-0 to Carlton Town less than 24 hours before seeing the stand blown down, which saw them having to deal with a new problem with repairs costing them more than £20,000.

Sheppey United also had a similar issue a few years back, with the main stand as can be seen below, ended up in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division side’s car park.

This came shortly after they had made the ground Step 4 standard after seven years of hard work to get it to that status.
