The Sun writer’s post: “Odd mood on Whitehall now. A cross between a Royal wedding, with patriotic Brits waving union flags, and a Millwall game with drunk EDL sorts chanting Tommy Robinson slogans. All quiet in Downing Street as Cabinet ministers arrive for the PM’s private party.”

The Championship club’s statement read: “Millwall Football Club is aware of a social media post from a national newspaper’s political editor and can confirm that it has commenced discussions with its legal team in response.
“The club is outraged and expects an immediate and comprehensive public apology to be made to its supporters by the individual in question.
“No further comment will be made at this time.”
Tom Newton Dunn saw it and replied to the club: “My apologies, tweet deleted. No offence was intended.”
After seeing that reply and that Millwall are set to take legal advice against him, fans certainly got vocal about it…

Your tweet was intended to mock and it’s too easy to bring millwall into it,knowing how much negative press ( not all wrong) they have had over the years offence was intended you just didn’t expect a response

@tnewtondunn ‘no offence was intended’ What exactly did you hope to achieve with the tweet? Genuine question….

Great at lat someone fighting our corner! We were a trade union team and the whipping boys for societies woes is getting pretty tiresome. We have fans from all walks and opinions. Thats reality! The media despise our fans even Marxist ones.

Great. It's about time we started fighting back against slur after slur.

Well done Millwall. We’ve turned the other cheek often enough.

Good – sick of people labelling the club and making derogatory comments. Collective bigoted remarks would not be accepted if directed at other sections of society!

Good job and ban the sun newspaper reporters from your stadium.
