Mikel Arteta fumes over ’embarrassing’ and ‘disgraceful’ Newcastle goal against Arsenal

Mikel Arteta fumes over what he has labelled an ’embarrassing’ and ‘disgraceful’ goal that won it for Newcastle against Arsenal.

The Gunners boss was angry at controversial Anthony Gordon winner that survived a four-minute, triple VAR check, with the goal award condemning Arsenal to their first Premier League defeat of the season.

Mikel Arteta has described the controversial decision to award Newcastle’s winning goal against Arsenal as “disgraceful” and “embarrassing”.

Anthony Gordon’s goal was given after a triple VAR check with Arsenal arguing the ball had gone out of play in the build-up and Gabriel was then pushed in the back.

Claims for an apparent offside were also not upheld after the video assistant referee deemed they couldn’t determine the moment of contact when the ball was passed to Gordon.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC MOTD: “I have praised my players for the way they played and competed in this stadium against this team. The result should not be what it is – there are many reasons for that.

“If there was a team looking to win the game today it was Arsenal.

“Embarrassing what happened – how this goal stands, in the Premier League – this league we say is the best in the world.

“I’ve been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It’s a disgrace and there’s too much at stake here. We are trying to do incredible things and be at the highest level each week. When we’re not good enough I hold my hands up and take responsibility.

“The outcome is nowhere near the level this league needs to have and the way this league is getting competed in. It’s not good enough. I feel embarrassed to be part of this.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “The circumstance around it [the match], we’re suffering a bit of bad luck at the moment – we’re losing players but the response of the players we do have fit and available has has been incredible. Can see from the spirit at the end, the determination to hold on, the collective effort was superb.”

On Anthony Gordon’s goal: “With every VAR check that was going on we thought one would cost us in the end. Initially I thought it was a good goal but I saw hesitation rom the referee. Obviously pleased goal was given, a good goal from our perspective.

“It was a real battle between normally two teams a lot more fluid than that. Both teams knew we had to fight to win. Wasn’t a game of beauty. It was lot of aerial balls, which was a a marker of how hard the game was. Thankfully, we came out on top.”

“Praising my players for the way we played, we didn’t deserve to lose the match playing in their ground and we lose because of clear and obvious decisions. It is embarrassing, it is a disgrace, that’s what it is, a disgrace.”

Questioned about PGMOL, he added: “We’ve been taking it up (with the PGMOL) for months. There is too much at stake, we put in so many hours. I’m here to represent the football club and to get my team to compete at the highest level, the margins are so small, it’s a disgrace, embarrassing.

“It is how I feel. The amount of messages we’ve sent saying this cannot continue. I’m sorry, embarrassing. I’m defending my players when I have to, I defend my job when it is not good enough. I have to be here, to say it now, it is not acceptable, too much at stake.

“You look at the images and I don’t know how to feel. I am wasting my time, we are wasting our time. I don’t want to be in the hands of people. It is difficult enough to compete against this really good team. The way we play, the way we compete, it is embarrassing, there is too much at stake.”

In the press briefing, he continued: “We have to talk about the result and talk about how the hell this goal stands. I feel embarrassed, I have to be the one to come in here and defend the club and ask for help because it is a disgrace that this goal is allowed.”

Asked why: “Because it is not a goal, for more than one reason, it is not a goal. Too much at stake, we put so much effort in and it is a disgrace. I feel embarrassed, I did 20 years in this country and this is nowhere near the level to describe this as the best league in the world.

Arteta was told about Stockley Park’s lack of clips: “That makes it even worse. You just need to see one image and it is finished. If you have any doubt look at a second and if this is a goal. I don’t care what they say, it is the outcome, whatever they say it is too late.”

Asked which aspect he was most angered with: “This is really the question? It is not a goal, it’s simple, it’s not a goal. For a goal to be allowed there are things that prior to that that are not allowed in football. In here, China, Japan, Spain, Italy, Portugal. They are not allowed.”

This is what fans said after Mikel Arteta fumes over the ’embarrassing’ and ‘disgraceful’ Newcastle goal against Arsenal…

@CFCBamzy: He should keep crying, they robbed united some weeks back and their fans were laughing

@gulatiLFC: ā€œReferees are trying to make the best decisions. We need to understand that mistakes happen.” Mikel Arteta after Liverpool vs Spurs VAR controversy.

@spireflyer: Strange he didn’t cry and moan when Hojlund was hauled down in the box and no penalty given…

@djsherls: Always takes a loss well Arteta, I’ll give him that.

@antpike1983: Should it be replayed?

@_Lex_Had4: Didn’t he once say ā€˜mistakes happen’ with VAR??

@Nick___Collins: Football had a chance to come together after the VAR fiasco that happened with the Spurs vs Liverpool game. Instead, fans laughed at Liverpool and other managers said ā€œmove onā€. This Newcastle goal is nowhere near as bad either but they’ve soon changed their tune, what happened to moving on?

@twisztad: Arteta such a sore loser. They came for a draw, they wasted time from the first minute. One shot on target, give me a break. Trying to make it seem like we played negative football. The VAR issue is one thing, but don’t undermine the #TOONS. That’s why you lost. #nufc

@chrislowres92: Hope Arteta is still absolutely boiling and has a horrible Sunday. #nufc

@Andrew_hay85: Anyone checked on Arteta this morning? #NUFC

@TheKopHQ: Understandable that he’s very frustrated. But imagine how he’d feel if his team had a perfectly legitimate goal ruled out onfield for offside & then by VAR, even when the VAR official was notified that it was actually onside and a goal…

@darrenyarlett: Has he never ever watched a re run of his behaviour running up and down a touchline for 90 mins and he’s calls what happened yesterday embarrassing … couldn’t of happened to a nicer person

@Jayb1970NUFC: The disgrace is you Lego Heed, what about the ā€œredā€ Havertz should of had, countless mistakes the ref made on NUFC! You’ve created a team that is a mirror image of the pathetic way you conduct yourself on the touch line, that’s embarrassing! Now dry your eyes & fuck off! #NUFC

@NatashaNUFC: Underrated part of this is a journo asking ā€œfor which of the three reasons wasn’t it a goalā€ and Arteta going ā€œis that really the question?ā€ YES MIKEL BECAUSE YOU’VE NEVER TOLD US WHY IT SHOULDN’T STAND šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ #nufc

@NufcNookieBrown: Best part of this for me is that Arteta claims his team ‘lost 3 points here today’ Sorry Mikel but even if our goal was disallowed, the game would have been a draw and you’d have got 1 point at best considering your team only managed 1 SoT all game šŸ””šŸ”š

@LilLoubieLou: Cry more šŸ˜‚ Was a different story when we were told to suck it up.
