Man City slammed over response to claims of Leeds fans in home end, fighting and arrests

Man City have been slammed over their response to claims of Leeds fans in the home end, reports of fighting and arrests made.

A serious assault is said to have took place in the home end, a City fan badly injured, but it seems the club’s initial denial in regards to its seriousness backfired, with fan groups now demanding urgent safety reviews. Police and club investigations continue into the incident.

It took place during Man City’s 3-2 Premier League win over Leeds at the Etihad Stadium, a fight reportedly broke out in a home section, with a Manchester City fan suffering a broken leg (confirmed as a broken tibia).

Greater Manchester Police arrested five people on suspicion of affray, all have been bailed pending ongoing investigation.

Initial social media reports claimed Leeds fans in hospitality/home areas (allowed under City’s neutral policy) attacked Man City fans.

Man City initially issued a statement saying the incident “did not involve Leeds fans” and that injuries were “nowhere near as serious” as rumoured (specifically denying a broken leg).

This statement was quickly contradicted by multiple sources, including the Manchester Evening News, which confirmed a City fan did suffer a broken leg.

Nine Manchester City fan groups (including the Official Supporters Club and City Matters) released a joint letter describing a “brutal attack”, criticising the club’s response, and demanding a full investigation, especially ahead of the upcoming home game against Galatasaray (a club with a history of away fans obtaining tickets in home sections).

An open letter read: “At the Leeds game our understanding is that a City supporter was brutally attacked by Leeds fans who not only had tickets in the home ends but when they were originally challenged by stewards, instead of being escorted out of the stadium they were moved elsewhere and left in a bar area to cause more trouble.

“A City supporter has now apparently got a broken tibia below the knee. Our sympathies are with him and his family.

“Groups have told the club on many occasions that the current ticketing policies are causing safety issues. Something needs to change now otherwise we may see a repeat of this.

“The club needs to make a public comment as to how this has happened and to undertake a full investigation.

“We note that in January the club are scheduled to play Galatasaray at home, a club with previous history of obtaining tickets in the home end. We ask the club to urgently review the ticket for this game in particular with a view to ensuring the safety of all fans attending.

Man City Fan Support (@ManCityHelp) wrote: “We are aware of an incident that took place at the Etihad Stadium yesterday between a group of fans.

“From the information that has been provided to the Club by the relevant authorities and through internal investigations, we can confirm that this incident did not involve Leeds fans and that the injuries were nowhere near as serious as the inaccurate rumours which have circulated online.

“This matter is subject to an ongoing police investigation.”

@WeAre1894 responded: “Nowhere near as serious” “Inaccurate rumours” please stop trying to cover up & start making changes to ticketing and stewarding policy. The fan’s operation is now Wednesday. Full support to the Blue & his family from all Blues.

@MCFCfoodbank added: This message from the club has now become extremely concerning to say the least. Clarity and explanations needed urgently. In the meantime, our thoughts remain with the supporter who has suffered a significant injury. We hope their recovery goes well.

As mentioned, Man City have been slammed over their response to claims of Leeds fans in home end, fighting and arrests…

@mcfcsince1894: we were aware of incidents to our left in 93.20 which quite clearly involved rival supporters in the home section (didn’t see any injuries thankfully) – which begs the question why is it so easy for away fans to buy corporate tkts, City fans have repeatedly warned club about this

@Magicjohnny2: Plenty in 9320 seats. All filming away end when they scored. Stewards were told and only threw one out. Rest laughing. Shambles. It’s every game.

@GillyClarke25: Of all the things the club have put out/said in the past few years, I reckon this is up there within the top 1. Protecting an ‘image’, over the safety of their own fans 👍

@nik0_mcr: I genuinely think this is one of the worst lows I’ve ever seen in regards to how the club treats our own fans in the modern era. Denial and downplaying on social media, while a Blue is in hospital undergoing emergency surgery from an avoidable situation

@CityBIue: the club is dying before our very eyes. please @ManCity, stop treating your own fanbase with utter hatred.

@Josh9320mcfc: There is literally videos showing Leeds fans doing it

@MarkIHarrison: The club is so embarrassing. Don’t give a fuck about this stuff but if you want to sell to a fellow blue for face value, they fucking hate you.

@PaulHar10765609: Understood ? If he was in hospitality or any other part of the ground and was attacked by Leeds fans to cause injuries such as this you could sue the club for millions. Don’t want be a cunt but it sounds like bullshit.

@jamessaltoft: Clearly this has been a problem for ages, City fans passing on tickets to opposing fans. This is why I’ve always said club needs to have control and has to impose it strictly for safety reasons!!

@BradSmi94630046: Stop lying, there were Leeds fans everywhere and you didn’t nothing about it. I had 2 in front of me. The only thing you support is your bank.

@fred_doherty: Leeds fans everywhere in 119, who do you expect when you stop city fans transferring tickets?

@BlooSoo2: Saw 3 Leeds fans going into the family stand yesterday and they weren’t stopped AFAIK. One of them was singing that following on song thinking it was funny. City fans have trouble getting tickets and have to jump through hoops for them but if you pay enough cash it’s ok 😤

@Jim91MCFC: I fuckin saw them you lying prats, stop trying to save face and do something about it!

@MrsZabba: I am interested to understand what you mean by not serious. I think that when you discover what the injury is you will reconsider this and maybe fact check before putting a statement such as this out. The fan is a friend of mine and is in hospital.

@prestigecar_rep: Your new stewards are a joke also. They havnt got a clue.

@george96_: Absolute bollocks. A friend of mine that I sat next to in 93:20 for a few years is still in hospital awaiting surgery… this is the exact reason I left 93:20. Away fans in there all the time. Useless.

@callummchal3: Can you explain all the videos going round of Leeds fans in the city end? Happens way too often now…
