Luton left disgusted after Watford fan throws flare during minutes silence

Luton Town have been left disgusted after a Watford fan throws a flare of Watford’s colours during a minutes silence for Prince Philip.

James Collins’ penalty was the only goal of the game and it was an important victory for the Hatters as it was over their fierce rivals.

Luton were awarded a penalty with 18 minutes to go, as Collins came off the bench to send ‘keeper Daniel Bachmann the wrong way to beat Watford at Kenilworth Road for the first time since 1993.

The result dealt Watford’s automatic promotion hopes a horrid blow, though Swansea City and Brentford could only draw in the chase to win promotion behind Norwich City in the Championship table.

Luton Town tweeted on the ill-timed incident and have vowed to take serious action against the person responsible for it.

They tweeted: “To the @WatfordFC fan who didn’t realise the yellow and red flare thrown into the ground would turn 🟠

“You car registration plate has been passed onto the authorities.

“Awful timing with the minute’s silence for HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, taking place.”

“Today was all about us,” Nathan Jones said after the game. “For us to do what we did to them, we didn’t just win, we were totally dominant from start to finish. For me it was one of the most complete performances since I have been a manager, considering the opposition and the level.

“We have beaten sides 8-2, 7-0, 7-1 and 5-0 but this was a proper performance in terms of how we worked, how we pressed, everything about it. Doing the ugly stuff, moving the ball, it should have been three or four, if we had a clinical edge about us today.

“It is a significant victory because it is against our local rivals,” the gaffer continued. “We haven’t played here against them in 15 years and the level of performance we put in today was wonderful.”

Jones was well aware of the importance of the fixture, saying: “Today, Luton Town totally dominated that game and I’m so proud of them, so proud of our club.

“I want to dedicate that firstly to Gary Sweet, he is a big Luton fan and what he has done with 2020, he has waited for days like this and our fans because imagine if there was fans here today.

“Results like this mean so much to me, so much to our players but even more so to the fans, to the consortium and Gary who heads it, lives it and breathes it. A really good day for us today.”

It comes just a week after a video of those controversial fireworks at Celtic Park also during a minutes silence for the Prince, whose funeral took place after the 12:30pm kick offs on Saturday.

Police have launched an investigation after fireworks were set off outside Celtic Park during a two-minute silence.

While both teams were observing the silence, bangs were heard from outside the ground. A video of what could be heard from inside the stadium can be seen below…

Officers confirmed an investigation is underway after the incident but so far we have not heard of any arrests made.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are investigating the misuse of fireworks outside Celtic Park stadium on Saturday, 10 April, 2021. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

You can see a group of lads setting up the fireworks beside the ground ready to go on cue of the minutes silence. Two clips have been uploaded…
