Luton fans fume at full time after watching 5-1 defeat to Middlesbrough

Luton Town fans fume at full time after watching their side suffer a 5-1 defeat away to Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon.

Delano Burgzorg and Finn Azaz both scored two goals each, with Emmanuel Latte Lath also helping Boro inflict a heavy defeat on Rob Edwards’ struggling side.

The loss was Luton’s eighth in 15 Championship games since their relegation from the Premier League, having spent just one season in the top flight after Edwards guided them to a historic promotion 18 months ago.

Their 5-1 thumping of Luton means Middlesbrough could well go into the international break in the play-off places.

Blackburn are also in a healthy position after their 3-1 victory at Cardiff.

Luton’s loss by four goals at Middlesbrough means they drop a place, despite being among a number of teams on 15 points.

They could well end the day in the relegation zone if Plymouth pick up a point against Derby.

Middlesbrough: Dieng, Dijksteel, Edmundson (Fry 75′), Clarke, Ayling, Morris (Barlaser 71′), Hackney, Doak (Jones 81′), Azaz, Burgzorg (Hamilton 71′), Latte Lath (Conway 71′)

Subs: Barlaser, Fry, McGree, Jones, Howson, Hamilton, Conway, Brynn, McCormick

Luton: Kaminski, Mengi, McGuinness, Holmes, Hashioka, Baptiste (Krauß 55′), Walsh (Nakamba 59′), Bell (Moses 45′), Chong, Woodrow (Morris 55′), Adebayo (Clark 59′)

Subs: Andersen, Moses, Krauß, Morris, Nakamba, Mpanzu, Clark, Brown, Krul

Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick told BBC Tees:

“It was a really good day. We had to be good to win because the way they play, they make it really difficult and you could see that at the start of the game with the way they pressed man for man.

“The longer the game went, we got to grips with it, and the ideas we were looking at started to come off and you could see the front lads were really good today.

“As a team I thought we were terrific, I thought we defended really well. The midfield boys were fantastic off the ball and picking up second balls and starting our attacks.

“That is two or three weeks now where we have scored a good number of goals and it is a great feeling for the boys to have.”

Luton manager Rob Edwards told BBC Three Counties Radio:

“The people I feel for most are the supporters who either got up really early this morning to make it for kick-off or came up last night and spent even more money.

“I obviously feel quite numb, it’s a horrible, horrible day for us, one of those days when you want the ground to swallow you up.

“I thought for the first 30 odd minutes we were playing really well but a couple of errors and we go in 2-0 down, and then a few more errors and all of a sudden it’s 4-0.

“Some of them (who started) performed well, and maybe one or two didn’t, but it’s not their fault, it’s mine.”

Twitter users gave their reaction as Luton fans fume at full time after watching 5-1 defeat to Middlesbrough…

@HellholeIsland: Good old Robbie Edwards: if plan A doesn’t work, try plan A again. Repeat until beaten.

@ActualOllieKay: Well done lads. Easily the shittest performance of the season….so far

@ltfcdewar: No admin that’s the tunnel, we want the corner flag

@FanHubHatter: Last season we got beat 5-1 away at man city. This season we’re getting done the same but Boro…. Levels.

@MartinEcott1: What an absolute shower of a team. If that’s not RE’s last game in charge then the board needs a head examination. B2B relegation is on the cards unless change happens now.

@ajfkosovo: Disgraceful performance. We folded the moment they scored and 5-1 probably flatters us. Some very odd decisions for the starting XI, but too many players simply did not perform. Have they lost faith in the manager? A massive 2 weeks for the club now

@ltfc_jt: thanks for everything rob

@Maccahatter: That was a performance of a team that look like heading in a certain direction.

@LewisT_Williams: The board have been amazing for many years. This particular year a few mistakes have been made, mistakes happen. Time to own up, and make things right again and that’s getting a new manager in. #LTFC

@p_clark60: I’ve backed Edwards but not sure how he survives that. 9 of the players who started the 2nd half Rob signed. If he goes, Mark Robins for me. He won’t be out of the game for long & will be even more determined now to prove he is the man to take a club to the PL 🧡⚽ #COYH #LTFC

@LTFC_Dave: In defence of RE I think he’s been hamstrung by our lack of ambition in the last 3 windows with the club rightly or wrongly prioritising the new ground. Barely spending in Jan when we had a chance of survival and then a negative net spend this summer HAS to be questioned #LTFC

@ltfc_t: Edwards walked over to the fans and waved. It only means one thing doesn’t it? #ltfc

@jamie_castle96: Pretty sure that was a wave goodbye by Rob there. Really sad for it to end like this. The man gave me the single best day of my football life and for that I’m incredibly grateful. But, now is definitely the right time, for both parties. He needs a rest, we need a reset. #LTFC

@LTFCDepression: Where are all those people now saying we’re wrong for wanting Rob Edwards out Huh? 4-0 questionable team selections and subs, constantly take one step forward two massive steps back, no sign of anything improving yet “we should remember who we are” get fucked #LTFC

@killawat: Not a fan of calling for managers to go. Personally I think RE has earned the right to try and change things but something is not right. He looks completely dejected and defeated. The players are a shadow of who we know them to be. There is a lot of work to do. #COYH #Luton

@kevshat: If that wave at the end was goodbye Rob then thank you for making my dreams as a Luton fan come true and giving me memories I’ll never forget 🧡 #COYH
