A football fan has gone viral after he phoned in to a radio show to reveal he switched allegiance from Barnsley to their Yorkshire rivals.
BBC Sheffield uploaded a clip from their ‘Football Heaven’ show of a caller who explained he was a Barnsley fan until a few years ago but he now he supports Sheffield Wednesday.
He began the call by saying he was “a Barnsley lad, born in Barnsley, Barnsley all my life” and that he “married his wife a few years ago and changed to Sheffield Wednesday.”
It left the radio presenter surprised before he then asked how the conversion went, he found out the fan was a season ticket holder at Oakwell but not long after getting married, his wife and stepson asked him to go to match at Hillsborough. His grandkids were also “part of the Wednesday setup” so he decided to get an Owls season ticket and he had been going to their matches ever since.
Again, the radio presenter was left rather baffled, said he didn’t know the rules and that he was still trying to figure out what to do with his seven year old.
He asked what had convinced him, the fans replied back “I’m football, I’ve been football all my life and I think football is football no matter who you watch. i think my heart will always be with Barnsley, but I do enjoy goign to watch Sheffield Wednesday I must admit.”
He added he had been a season ticket holder for the last three years before the presenter asked “Did you get much stick at the time?”. The fan replied back that he did from friends and that his family were also big Barnsley fans, it was tough but he did it for himself and his family.
