Lincoln City are the EFL Trophy Final winners

Lincoln City are the winners of this season’s EFL Trophy Final after beating League One high flyers Shrewsbury Town 1-0.

Elliott Whitehouse scored the only goal of the game for the League Two playoff hopefuls infront of a crowd of 41,261 at Wembley Stadium.

Shrewsbury nearly scored within the first five minutes. Shaun Whalley’s corner was headed as far away as Bryn Morris on the edge of the box. He volleyed towards goal and hits the top of the crossbar.

Matt Rhead was booked after he cynically clattered into Salop goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who remained down and received treatment.

10 minutes later, an inswinging corner ended up spilt by Dean Henderson into the path of Elliott Whitehouse who tapped in from close range to make it Lincoln’s first ever goal at Wembley.

A flurry of chances from Shrewsbury in the second half who look much more fired up for the contest, but it wasn’t enough as they couldn’t find a goal.

It was Shrewsbury’s fourth visit, losing on all of their visits to the national stadium.

Meanwhile the Imps become the first fourth-tier club to win the competition since Luton’s victory in 2009.
