Kalvin Phillips absolutely bodies Kai Havertz TWICE to get crowd roaring at Wembley

Footage has gone viral and it shows Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips absolutely bodies Kai Havertz TWICE to get crowd roaring at Wembley.

The midfielder made the people of his home city as well as in the ground sit up and watch with a proud grin on their faces as he made history in England’s 2-0 Euro 2020 win over Germany.

He’s only the third Whites player to start a knockout game in a European Championships and the first Englishman since Norman Hunter in 1968, becoming the first of the club’s players to win a knockout game at a Euros since the tournament’s 1960 inception.

And if that doesn’t sufficiently explain just how special a night it was for Phillips, his performance and how he dealt with the opposition made it all the better.

There was a lot of pre-game chat on Toni Kroos, who is described as a ‘world class’ operator according to Phillips, and whilst we thought the German would dictate play in midfield alongside Leon Goretzka, it was actually well handled by the Premier League player along with Declan Rice who held more their own.

Phillips wasted no time in showing how confident he was, while Rice began to show he can hold possession and get himself forward after the break.

The Leeds player really shone in the first 45 minutes, keeping the flow nice and easy in the first quarter of an hour, when there were no real opportunities to turn and play forward.

Kalvin’s first tackle on Havertz delighted the 40,000 fans at Wembley and countless others watching back home in West Yorkshire.

After a few good balls in before chances went wide, Phillips wanted a lot more of the ball, making it clear vocally, got into a rhythm and moved higher up the pitch.

He loved getting down the right wing, and was always there to get back and snatch possession off Germany, something he did as the half ended, with a more aggressive tackle sending Havertz sailing through the air. Absolutely no issue with it and the crowd was proper loving it.

The last part of the opening half saw him put a tackle on Kroos, which left the Real Madrid player limping and Phillips was subsequently handed a yellow card by Dutch referee Danny Makkelie.

Phillips’ second half saw him track more runs, get into space away from the ball saw pull German players away from his England team-mates and was more limited with chances, yet did the job in hand, enough to prevent his nation’s rivals from scoring.

Once England secured that two-goal cushion, Phillips and his fellow defenders put in every pass and cross to go on and get that fourth consecutive clean sheet.

The final whistle was blown and for all of the fans, staff and players inside the stadium that night, it was a noise so loud that it made the occasion all the more special considering what everyone has endured during the pandemic. Finally something to cheer about.

Phillips maintains his ever-present record at his first major tournament, playing each and every minute, didn’t conceded any goals and history made. The route to the final is now as easy as it could get with some huge nations dumped out.

As mentioned, Kalvin Phillips absolutely bodies Kai Havertz TWICE to get the crowd roaring at Wembley, and there was also chat on Phillips leaving a mark on Kroos who now looks set to retire…
