James McClean gets punished by Stoke over his controversial social media post, which saw his sit in front of his children wearing a balaclava.
He uploaded the photo to his Instagram story before deleting it and making his account private shortly after, though it’s not stopped him getting criticised.
The photo shows the Derry native sporting a balaclava – headwear synonymous with the IRA – while sitting in front of two of his children indoors.
As can be seen above, the caption on the picture reads: “Today’s school lesson – history” while also including a laughing emoji with it.

Stoke City can confirm: “Following an internal disciplinary review, disciplinary action has been taken against James McClean for an inappropriate social media post.
“McClean has been fined two weeks’ wages by the Club and has also agreed to delete his Instagram account.
“The player has expressed contrition and recognises that the post was ill advised and offensive.
He said: “I never wanted to cause any offence but I now realise that I did so and for that I apologise unreservedly. I have spoken to the Club and will be deleting my Instagram account.”
The Club and the player will be making no further comment on the matter.

James McClean is the hero this club needs right now

He’s apologised for what he did and knows that it is wrong, I disagree with people turning on him and saying get rid. I prefer to judge a player based on his performances on the pitch, not what he is like off it

No not “sadly” the right decision Jon. An extremely lenient and pathetic decision and response from our club I’d say!! Unpopular opinion I’m afraid – he’s not fit to wear our shirt and never has been!! However at times such as these who needs a distraction such as James McLean.

For one social media post that has since been deleted? Bore off

Honestly now, fuck you james mcclean. This is not the first time, or the second. It’s the third or fourth time he’s been warned / disciplined for IRA content. Get rid. @stokecity

What a fucking shambles! He should be sacked. Spineless from the club. That doesn’t shock me though with the two tits in charge John Coates and Tony Scholes. Any shit he gets from the stands is of his own making. No moaning thanks.

What a twat he never learns ?

Dont you get it tho. People should be allowed to abuse Jame McClean, and his very understandable views, whenever they want to, but he should in no way be allowed to respond in even the slightest manner cause itll upset the Brexit lot

I absolutely adore James McLean. This is his finest work to date, he's got EFL Twitter in a proper state. Fucking outstanding work. https://t.co/EpFfXmGMg9
