Huddersfield players left ‘crying in dressing room’ after ‘scandalous’ late penalty decision

Huddersfield players were left ‘crying in the dressing room’ after a ‘scandalous’ late penalty decision in the game against Bristol City.

Andre Breitenreiter and his squad were devastated in the dressing room following a contentious late penalty call that went against them in their 1-1 draw at Ashton Gate.

The Terriers manager believed his team had secured a crucial victory in their fight to avoid relegation after Josh Koroma scored in the 81st minute at Ashton Gate.

Ollie Turton was judged to have handled a cross sent in by Cameron Pring, but Breitenreiter was unhappy with the decision and called for the EFL to bring VAR to the Championship.

He said, per Yorkshire Post: “I have said before that the Championship needs VAR for sure and this moment proved it. We don’t think it was a penalty and a referee needs to be 150 per cent sure to award one in the 98th minute.

“VAR would have meant justice for my team. I spoke to the referee afterwards and she explained her reasons for the decision, but that doesn’t change anything.

“I feel so sorry for my players because they are crying in the dressing room, yet their performance today was all I could have asked. We played as a team for 90 minutes, working hard throughout and created chances.

“Maybe we should have scored a second goal, but we defended well as a team, which is what we needed in more games in the past. You could tell the Bristol City fans were unhappy with their team at half-time and that shows how well we played. Ollie Turton is in the dressing room trying to apologise for a mistake. But he didn’t make a mistake.”

Victory would have left Huddersfield sitting above the bottom three, but Bristol City’s equaliser sent the Terriers into the drop zone.

Despite a late goal from Wells, Breitenreiter was pleased with his side’s performance, adding: “It isn’t the first time a big decision has gone against us. But I would rather talk about the performance than something over which we have no control. The players are so disappointed, but they shouldn’t be because they did so well.

“Now we have two home games in the final three and have to play with the same attitude.”

“It was a little bit too sloppy, we turned it over too cheaply and we were a little too passive with the ball,” Bristol City boss Liam Manning said, per Bristol World.

“A tough game, a frustrating game, but big credit to the players for sticking at it and fighting to the end.
“It’s about the balance of the performance against the outcome of the game. The lads are pretty flat because they know a lot of the performance was on us, but they are quite honest with themselves, it’s a new experience for the group and scoring that late on to take something from the game was good.”

He continued: “The first half was just too passive, with the ball and with our running, the basic stuff like when you have an unforced error, don’t follow it up with another one, make sure you get back in when they’re pressing don’t be afraid to spin them and try and hurt them that way.

“I thought we started the second half ok, there was more purpose, more intent and we engaged a little bit higher. It was a bit of a low-level quality game for me.”

On the handball incident in the 98th minute to provide the chance to draw level: “For me, it was really difficult to see, I haven’t actually watched it yet so I’ll have a look back.

“It’s one of those, it’s tough for them, we’ve had a couple at Millwall and Norwich conceding late, at this stage of the season it’s tough.”

Twitter users gave their reaction with Huddersfield players left ‘crying in the dressing room’ after the ‘scandalous’ late penalty decision…

@RhysCurtis14: The standard of officiating in the EFL is at an all time low! Never ever a pen!

@BCFCTIlIDIE: Even from a city fan that was a woeful decision and I would be livid if that went against us especially in a relegation battle.Welsh really doesn’t deserve to referee the men’s game

@CharlieMeade7: It’s an absolute robbery. No idea how Rebecca Welsh is officiating in this league or any league. To give +5 minutes and take it to +9 to give a decision like that is ridiculous.

@JacenFC: I’m a city fan but she was absolutely awful some of the decisions she gave both teams were ridiculous she had absolutely no control of that game

@KroB91875: I’m a blues fan – love to see it but Christ that’s a shocker 😂😂😂😂😂

@bobnicolson: I don’t like to criticise refs as it’s not their fault we can’t string 10 passes together. But that’s a shocking decision, going to cost us big time.

@AlexMoorsey22: Not a penalty in a million years and if you think it is then that’s the problem with the game. Can’t imagine where we will be in 10 years time

@SnrPolitoHolt: No need to think as it wasn’t a penalty. The ball was kicked directly into his arm which was in a natural position.

@mackem49000: Absolutely disgusting decision borders on cheating

@SC1975BCFC: Not a penalty, agreed, but she also missed a handball that led to Huddersfield’s goal so it evened itself out.

@fred_htafc08: I feel so bad for Ollie, so hard done by #htafc

@MoonTerrier: That’s not an unnatural position, it’s hit his arm and it didn’t stop the cross as it would have hit his body, shocking decision which could cost us dearly

@BS3Rob: Wasn’t a penalty but she was solid for 90 minutes and still the away end sing not fit to referee from the word go. Then they time waste on 92 and try to game her too. Anything past time added on is pure karma, as is blaming her.

@MarkAbel_28: VAR check and penalty isn’t given. Impossible for referees to be 100% at the normal speed of play from a distance away from the incident.

@BarnBcfc: Never a penalty, she was absolutely clueless all game, the bookings she gave out were comical & the extra 5 minutes she added in injury time was way above what it should have been even with the timewasting. Worked in our favour today but must be sickening to be on the wrong end🤮

@TheBenChadwick: Absolute scandal of a decision! Could be difference between staying up and going down. Disgrace!

@craigsaddy: Surely if this is a penalty we need to be looking at recruiting defenders who don’t have arms. It’s this kind of short sighted recruitment that will relegate us!

@joltsie: That is sickening could cost us our place in the league

@jasesherratt: Fuckin hell that’s absolutely abysmal. Huddersfield genuinely robbed

@nickkwood: I have absolute no idea what is & isn’t handball anymore, no idea. I’m pretty objective & he’s running with his arm slightly out, but you can’t run with your hands tied behind your back. To give this anytime but in the 100th minute is just gobsmacking. #htafc
