Grimsby boss says justice was done after ‘horrific’ penalty decision in draw at Newport

Grimsby Town boss David Artell says justice was done after the ‘horrific’ penalty decision given in the draw at Newport County.

Referee James Oldham determined that Kieran Green had fouled Newport striker Kyle Hudlin inside the penalty area, when he actually made a good tackle, winning the ball, shortly before the hour mark.

The Grimsby keeper Jordan Wright however dived low to his left to keep out Hudlin’s spot kick to keep the scoreline at 0-0.

The result means that Grimsby sitting 7th in the League Two table with 25 points from 16 games, while Newport are 15th with 20 points from the same amount of games played.

“The penalty decision was horrific,” said Artell, as per South Wales Argus. “Both benches agreed that’s just not a penalty.

“Referees make mistakes and that was 100 per cent a mistake. It was a clean tackle, a brilliant tackle.

“I don’t think the referee had his best game. They could have had a penalty early on, and there should have been a red card in the first half – [Bobby] Kamwa nearly broke Ty’s leg. And we scored a goal that wasn’t offside.

“The ref made some bad decisions, but then so did my players and Newport’s players.”

“I thought both teams could have won it and both could have lost it,” he added.

“It was a competitive game. On the one hand, I’m delighted with the clean sheet and our unbeaten run continuing away from home.

“On the flip side, did we do enough to win it? Maybe, on another day. We had some great chances, but so did they. So, maybe a point is a fair result.”

Newport boss Nelson Jardim said, per South Wales Argus: “I have to focus on the overall performance and we were good.

“We were the better team in terms of everything, mainly creating goal-scoring chances even if we didn’t score and for the second game at home we had a penalty saved.

“We have played a third of the league games now and have 20 points. We have 30 games to go, how quickly can we get another 10 wins?

“It’s a point and we will focus on our performances because the results won’t always go for you.

“It was a bitter taste at the end but we are one third into the season and have 20 points, if we do the same in the other thirds then we will be okay.

“At least we are creating and getting into good positions to score.

“I am not completely happy and want them to be doing more but when you are forced into so many changes then you have to go back to basics, making sure players are thinking about the same things at the same time.

“I was pleased with the overall performance and the goal-scoring chances were there, some of them obvious. We have to keep going and forcing things to create more chances to score.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Grimsby boss David Artell says justice was done after that ‘horrific’ penalty decision in the draw at Newport…

@BM____7: Mate look how close the ref is and he’s still given that 😂😂😂😂😂😂

@7Sec4: Its a clean tackle. Terrible refereeing decision.

@bmussell1997: Fair play to the ref. Could be one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen

@ViewFromPontoon: It’s so so bad it’s funny

@MikeyMcMahon: Yet we’re never allowed a proper debate about the standard of referring in the lower divisions. Right in front of him, how’s he even thought about giving that?! #gtfc

@diddlydav: The standard of refereeing in league 2

@RikkiSmith93: What shocks me more is that the ref is about 2 yards away

@FrazerHGTFC: @refsupportuk Care to explain this an absolute joke of an decision #gtfc

@Fletch2sv: Typical football league refereeing. Absolutely shocking decision right in front of him

@samtownsend99: Honestly should be sacked for that absolute horrific

@JordanRich2003: If we’d had lost the game to that, I don’t know how I would be feeling. That’s is an absolute disgraceful decision, but I’m not surprised with how poor the level of officiating is in not just League Two, but the whole country. It’s so bad. Thankfully, justice was served. #GTFC

@TGSUK_2017: Absolutely diabolical. Please do explain to me on how the fuck is that a penalty. Is the guy friends with David Coote or something. Wright though, phenomenal!

@mattdannatt: Absolutely ridiculous decision. Thankfully justice was done. #GTFC

@joeleggett_: Hahahaha honestly the fucking idiot was stood 3 yards away from it and still give it

@mattjarvis11_: That is a completely clean tackle

@Proff741: Absolutely shocking decision.

@dlobrown619: @FA_PGMOL the standard of refereeing in league 2 this season is shocking. All you’ve got to do is look at the penalty decision for Newport against Grimsby to see how terrible the standard is. These refs are ruining the game

@wilkoraf: Absolutely disgusting refereeing in the Newport County v Grimsby Town game. Not a penalty in a million years.

@SocialEngland66: This is the typical level of referees in this country and nothing will ever be done about it.
