Gary O’Neil goes viral with his brilliant unique insight into pre-match preparation and training

Gary O’Neil goes viral with his brilliant unique insight into pre-match preparation and training as he appeared on Sky Sports.

The Wolves boss has been praised after Sky Sports provided some refreshing never-before-seen insight on the night they televised the Premier League fixture between Tottenham and Fulham.

O’Neil’s Wolves won 2-1 away at his former club Bournemouth on Saturday, with Sky showing just how he done it, taking in what was learned on the training ground and how they used it on the pitch.

He explains situations involving 4 v 3 in midfield and video of the match showed how his players took advantage, with Wolves having large numbers over Bournemouth in the centre of the park having switched the play and having a man over, just like they practised in training.

David Jones: What’s really fascinating is that we have to thank the Wolves analysts for this as well because they you’re going to share with us some of the preparation that went into this and we don’t normally get to see what happens on the training ground in readiness for match day, talk us through what’s going on here Gary

Gary O’Neil: Yeah if you if they can hold it there for me just so I can explain so this is we’ve been doing this for a couple of weeks obviously international break a lot of the boys were away but you can see that the opposition dressed up as Bournemouth would generally all be in orange but because of our Bournemouth press we saw I sort of highlighted this 4 v 3 diagonally across the pitch early in the two week prep that we could cause them some problems through this, so big up the free that we’re trying to target in yellow to make it really clear for the players to understand where we’re trying to get to try and make it as difficult as we can so you’ll see as you play this if we can get it to play first sort of pivot starts to move outside don’t know if the clip’s going to play here we go yeah so we start to move outside with the first pivot freeze up the second pivot and now this guy’s got a real problem because if he goes to fix it and make it a 3v3 we’ve got our 10 spare in this pocket so that’s just how we sort of prep the lads and how we start to build stuff on and you can see we got some real success from this 4 v 3 that we managed to progress through in the game and…

DJ: I think this is the second minute of the game

GO: Yeah so really good for the… and this is important as well that the lads start to get some success from it early in the game cus then they start to feel it they start to see the pictures that we prep for so as we work across to Toti Gomes here which we we expected Bournemouth to shift the ball that way, you can see the exact pictures from training, so Bouba starts to move Philip Billing across the pitch, Bouba starts to try and shift him, Joao Gomez recognises that’s the trigger to come down, and then Alex Scott will appear late trying to fix it, trying to get there to make give them their spare man, and now I think it’s Cunha in this clip who has rotated with Pedro will arrive to complete the 4 v 3 CB doesn’t want to come in with him and we’re out and the lads are now starting to see some of the oh yeah we’ve worked on this for a couple of weeks and this is definitely on so we don’t have any success from this one but there’s probably there’s probably 15 of those clips from the game that we could go through where we managed to progress up the pitch from the work that we’ve managed to do in a couple of weeks and then every manager’s dream next clip, score a goal from the exact 4 v 3

Jamie Carragher: So it works. I mean how satisfying that as a coach with you actually you see it, okay nothing comes at the end product but actually the work that you’ve put in that small details that you’re working on the training pitch to see that come to fruition on matchday

GO: Yeah and I think the way the way I coach the boys is extremely detailed and I’m sure if you spoke to them it would be quite a shift from what they’re used to but they the the importance for them of understanding that the detail I give can help so you’ll see the exact same picture here so we’re 1-0 down at this point away from home at Bournemouth and you see the exact same picture Philip Billing stuck in this sort of diagonal 4 v 3 we find one we find a spare one Alex Scott doesn’t know whether to come in on it or whether to stay because he’s got Pedro Neto behind him the sub I’ve got to credit Tommy Doyle cus once we brought him on he brought us some unbelievable quality with his passing and we managed to maximise this 4 v 3 in this instance, Alex Scott stuck between Tommy Doyle, Pedro Neto…

DJ: Great ball that is

GO: Yeah really good, ball through to Pedro, we’re in on the back line again for maybe the 15th 16th time and then when you’ve got players of Pedro Neto, Cunha and Channy’s ability arriving I mean it’s a fantastic team goal when you’ve worked on that for a couple of weeks to see that come off and get us back into the game was yeah was a real good one for us

JC: I looked at this goal and what I was thinking was I mean I watched Bournemouth a couple of weeks ago they played against Everton and they lost goals sort of in and around the box playing out from the back I mean that must have been a big part of sort of thinking you could get joy so I mean was this part of it it also when you know the goalkeeper has it they like to play quick you have got to be alive also

GO: Yeah I think we conceded a similar goal to this at Luton, like from you’re down to 10 men at this point so you’d probably want your goalkeeper to take his time if you’re Bournemouth, I spoke to Sa around taking our time but can we press like do we like the matchups on the backline yeah they’re not bad for us this week let’s go then let’s get after Bournemouth they’ve turned the ball over a little bit in this area I think one of the highest in the league for turnovers in that area can we get after them can we win the ball back obviously an error on their part and now this is not me this is the quality we have in the changing room this is unbelievable vision and delicate touch from Channy and then Sasa Kalajdzic is a fantastic finisher when he gets right on goal I know people mainly see him for his height and being a target but I promise you when he gets in on goal he’s so calm his finishing very very good.

Here’s how Twitter users reacted as Gary O’Neil goes viral with his brilliant unique insight into pre-match preparation and training…

@_Ade_: Imagine the fans who shout “gerrit fucking forward” watching this. Bet it confused the hell out of them and they’ll still be convinced they could do a job.

@connorahumpage: Love clips like this – great insight beyond the Pep admiration. Bournemouth are going to regret parting ways with Gary O’Neil that’s for sure – clever, clever man.

@GeorgeMorey93: But Bournemouth wanted someone who would play tiki taka from goal kicks and got rid of him. Bournemouth lose the game to Gary O’Neill & Wolves in the 88th minute, giving the ball away from a goal kick. Beautiful. 🤌🏻🤌🏻

@wolvespremier: Lot of people calling for his head just a few weeks in with no pre-season picking up a mess. Bright young manager who deserves an opportunity and we are lucky to have him and more importantly …our recruitment team for having the foresight to employ him. He’s no PE teacher…👏

@notpaul1985x: You’re unbelievably naive if you don’t think every single manager in top flight football understands the game inside and out. The only dinosaurs in football tend to be sat in the crowd. Every single one would laugh in your face if you start mentioning words like ‘progressive’.

@Sports_Mania99: Need more guests like this: coaches and players who have played the game at the highest level . Not box tickers like Carney and scott who offer nothing

@Lem_WWFC: That is incredible man. What the hell.

@paulmcm6: Gary O’Neil was absolutely excellent tonight. Articulate, passionate about the game, fascinating insights on coaching and on the game he watched too.

@fraserrlawrie: Wish sky sports would do more of this rather than the usual pish they serve up

@worthinggooner: Need more of this sort of analysis and less soap opera lad banter please. Shame this is only on MNF, should be the quality of analysis on every show

@finchy_84: Credit where due quality this is, one side of the coaching that fans rarely see.

@Ralphyyy99: Impressive to say the least! Can’t believe I was oneil out to be honest. Still early days but promising.

@SouthBankMatt: Impressive for a “PE Teacher.” 🐺

@LUFC_WorldWide: So interesting to get to see this from a current manager. More content like this please. Top manager Gary

@Pearcey1997: Brilliant coach, bet he’s laughing at Bournemouth now, Hel smash it at wolves

@CjCritch: All this, and the team that sought to sack him were on the receiving end. Seems a very popular, likeable, and importantly, knowledge coach/manager. 👍

@guildfdbluebird: That’s pretty impressive tbf

@BVause81: Gary O’Neil has been brilliant tonight 👏🏻 #MNF

@theswanspirlo: This is class love this type of analysis

@SolihullAVFC: Love it, could have a big future ahead of him.

@deanboultwood: Love this stuff. 👏🏻👏🏻 sounds a really good coach.
