Gary Neville demands points deduction as English clubs sign up to European breakaway league

Gary Neville demands for a points deduction to be handed out as English clubs sign up to the much talked about European breakaway league.

The former Manchester United defender has launched a scathing attack on the ;big six’ clubs that have signed up to a join the tournament, as he urged football authorities to dock points from them in this Premier League season. Imagine how that could change the table!

Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City have signed up to the breakaway plan, according to reports.

Senior UEFA figures are furious that 12 major European clubs, including the ‘big six’ from England, have signed up to a breakaway European Super League.

La Liga’s Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid and Serie A’s AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus are also involved.

Yet Neville reckons the eagerness to announce the plans at a time when so many clubs are struggling to contend with the fall out from the coronavirus pandemic should be condemned by all in the game.

“In the wake of Covid, it’s an absolute scandal,” said Gary Neville, speaking on Sky Sports. “United and the rest of the big six clubs who have signed up for it should be ashamed of themselves.

“They should deduct all top six teams point. To do it in the season – it’s a joke.”

The pundit also suggested that the presence of Arsenal in the list of teams threatening a breaking was a joke as he added: “European football league. Are Arsenal in that? They’ve just drawn with Fulham. And Manchester United are drawing with Burnley.”

The Premier League has said it “condemns any proposal that attacks the principles of open competition and sporting merit” following reports that six of its clubs were supporting a European Super League.

“The Premier League condemns any proposal that attacks the principles of open competition and sporting merit which are at the heart of the domestic and European football pyramid,” the league said in a statement.

The developments come on the eve of a new-look 36-team Champions League being discussed by UEFA on Monday.

“Fans of any club in England and across Europe can currently dream that their team may climb to the top and play against the best,” the statement continued.

“We believe that the concept of a European Super League would destroy this dream.”

“The Premier League is proud to run a competitive and compelling football competition that has made it the most widely watched league in the world.

“Our success has enabled us to make an unrivalled financial contribution to the domestic football pyramid.

“A European Super League will undermine the appeal of the whole game, and have a deeply damaging impact on the immediate and future prospects of the Premier League and its member clubs, and all those in football who rely on our funding and solidarity to prosper.

“We will work with fans, The FA, EFL, PFA and LMA, as well as other stakeholders, at home and abroad, to defend the integrity and future prospects of English football in the best interests of the game.”

‘It comes down to money, greed — obviously, we have heard nothing from FIFA yet but it doesn’t sound good. Let’s hope it is stopped in its tracks because it is just pure greed,’ Roy Keane has explained on Sky Sports.

‘We talk about the big clubs, but clubs like Bayern Munich are one of the biggest clubs in the world — they have taken a stand. That is a good start.’

Micah Richards then pitched in with further criticism of the plans.

‘The Premier League has been run amazingly, we all know that clubs are investments, it is a business at the end of the day,’ the former defender began.

‘What happens to the memories that the fans have had over the years? Are they just forgotten about?’

Fans reacted to Gary Neville on the European breakaway league plans…

@JJames_2020: Spot on. Spot fucking on.

@MUTDthoughts: Gary Neville is all of us rn

@Tactical_Times: If UEFA bans the ‘big 6’ from next season’s Champions League, on current league placing it would be Leicester, West Ham, Everton and Leeds. 10th and 11th place fighting out for the last spot. Villa just a point off with a game in hand. That’s what I call a race for top four.

@TransferChecker: Gary Neville is bang on. Hit these football club owners where it hurts. Take away their money. Take away their status. Move them all to the bottom of the table. Relegate them. They wanted to leave the league, so give them what they want and get rid of them.

@Joseph20032393: You know what. As scary as it is. I agree. Relegate them all. They deserve it thoroughly. I’ve been a liverpool fan all my life and never have I been so disgusted. #nosuperleague

@JAMESFF9: Since the PremierLeague was created, it was inevitable the top 6 clubs would have the ‘power base’

@wwfcscott: ‘Man United, Liverpool etc – Relegate them, rid them of all of their titles’ Gary Neville. Iconic.

@chshram: As a Spurs Fan, I’m gutted about my club seeming to support this Super League. Well said, Gary. Premier League was a step in the same direction, but that’s something different to pure greed and more matches the fans won’t care about.

@villanews11: Top 6 clubs is a myth. Everton were a top 6 club for years. So we’re villa, Newcastle etc. What rights do Spurs and arsenal have to be a top 6 club considering they are both slowly going back wards. Spurs haven’t won anything in years

@theredsforever: Speaking facts, appalled at all of them, surely it won’t happen but if it does the games gone

@davidpeterlee24: He may have been a United player, but what a great pundit, always straight talking , stuck it to these teams. Hats off to you GNEV 👏👏👏

@JoshW_G2: Americanisation is gonna ruin football

@GednySteve: Loving Gary’s passionate rant, spot on but Sky Sports should not try and take high ground when it comes to the morals of football.

@GW_94: Absolutely nailed it 👏👏👏👏

@EGPMarshyy: Absolutely spot on. Couldn’t of said it any better.

@LFCJosh23: I completely agree with Gary here, he’s absolutely spot on. Respect for speaking up to this level

@HaarisMahmood2: Never thought I’d ever agree with Nev 100% in my lifetime, but blimey he’s spot on.

@simonkimbrell: Absolutely bang on @GNev2, couldn’t have said it better myself. Vote with your feet, your wallets and your voices. This must not happen, ever.

@ChrisPartlow12: Doesn’t he work for the same company that did the same in 1992 or we don’t mention that?

@FeeltheJoe: Yes he does. Interesting the amount of coverage Sky Sports are giving to this, it’s as if they’re worried about something.

Reaction on social media continued as Gary Neville gives his thoughts on the European breakaway league…

@LoosRj: Spot on @GNev2 There is far too much greed in football these days and has been for some time now. It’s so sad to see. Good on you for standing up and voicing your opinion. I totally agree with you!

@ellis_platten: Relegate any team that wants in on a European Super League.

@rmbfc1: In my opinion let the big 6 join the Super League, kick them out of the Prem and replace them with the top 6 teams in the Championship. Only fair way

@ScottyTMJ: Tottenham with their two league titles are part of the “big 6” Two. Fuckin two. One less than Huddersfield Town. Cheeky cunts.

@mattylufc_: Another reminder that Leeds have won the league 3 times in 3 separate decades since big 6 team Spurs last won the league.

@ToonFan14: The @premierleaguecondemning the Big 6 for “breaking the rules”How ironic. Reap what you sow. #nufc

@ctidharry: Honestly would rather set up a new club called AFC Manchester city or something than watch my club go into this money making scheme and ruin the legacy of this club. I’m sure many of the other supporters from the “Big 6” will agree with me.

@PhilSuty: Wow – emotional, heartfelt speech from @GNev2The voice of the fans calling out the greedy owners of the big 6 clubs. This needs to stop immediately

@jon_newsome: Here, here….Gary Neville. These owners are completely removed from their clubs fan bases, from reality, from the history of our wonderful game. They say greed is the route of all evil and this is the epitome of it. They are an absolute disgrace..

@swansforever: Well done @GNev2 for calling out and criticising the big 6 in joining the European Super League

@davidmorganefc: Sky are to blame for this, they invented the Big 6 affording them protection, prioritising them over all other teams ensuring they get the most fixture revenue. The Prem League, FA & PGMOL have colluded

@LewisDeighton17: European Super League
– Join and you’ll be banned from every other domestic, European and world competition.
– Players won’t do it. They’ll sign for new elite Premier League clubs and so on.
– When the ‘Big 6’ come crawling back, stick ‘em in League 2 and make them earn status.

@victormirrordt: Totally agree. Not just football clubs being run for greed. It’s no longer the other half it’s the few who have the power and money to change the world for their own interests. Very sad

@ForeverAYellow: Gary Neville absolutely spot on with those European breakaway league plans, fuck them right off!
