France come out on top in a World Cup Final that had everything

France won the World Cup for the second time by beating Croatia 4-2 in a thrilling final in Moscow.

The French’s victory meant Didier Deschamps, who captained them to glory in 1998, became just the third man to win the competition as a player and coach.

History was made as Mario Mandzukic is the first ever player to score an own goal in a World Cup final.

Like their previous knockout games, Croatia pulled level through a well-taken goal from Ivan Perisic.

Then the first ever World Cup final penalty was awarded by VAR after was adjudged to have deliberately handled Blaise Matuidi’s flick-on.

Shortly after the second half began, play was halted temporarily due to four fans sprinting across the pitch, who were eventually taken down by security as the match briefly descended into chaos.

Griezmann converted the spot-kick, and France were in full control as Paul Pogba grabbed a third and Kylian Mbappe with the fourth to become the second teenager to score in a World Cup final since Pele.

A unbelievable mistake from goalkeeper Hugo Lloris gave Croatia hope, as his misplaced pass hit Mandzukic and rolled in, but France managed to hold on.

What a perfect match it was to sum up how brilliant this summer’s tournament has been.
