England player Kieran Trippier given 10 week football ban and fined for breaching betting rules

England player Kieran Trippier has been given a 10 week football ban and fined £70,000 for breaching betting rules by the FA.

Kieran Trippier withdrew from England’s squad ahead of their game against Denmark in October to attend a personal FA hearing in relation to betting charges.

The 29-year-old has insisted he has never profited from betting on football, or from others doing so on his behalf.

The suspension is effectively immediately after an investigation by an independent regulatory commission.

These relate to bets placed around the time of his move to Spain from Tottenham in July 2019 – an independent commission was appointed to hear the case, with four of the alleged breaches found proven and three dismissed.

He will miss 12 games for La Liga leaders Atletico, including their Champions League last-16 first leg tie at home to Premier League outfit Chelsea on 23 February.

However, he will be available for the Madrid derby on the 7th of March.

An FA statement read: ‘The Atletico Madrid defender denied seven alleged breaches of FA Rule E8(1)(b), which were said to occur during July 2019, and requested a personal hearing.

‘An independent regulatory commission was appointed to hear the case, with four of the alleged breaches found proven and three dismissed during a subsequent personal hearing.

‘The independent regulatory commission’s written reasons for its decisions and the associated sanction will be published in due course.

‘The suspension, which includes all football and football-related activity, is effective worldwide from today (Wednesday 23 December 2020) following an application to FIFA.’

Trippier was accused of breaking Rule E8(1)(a)(ii) and Rule E8(1)(b) of the FA’s Betting Rules which state players cannot place a bet relating to football or provide relevant confidential information to anyone who could bet on a scenario.

Recently we reported how John Terry’s brother Paul made ‘disturbing high-stake bets’.

The Aston Villa assistant’s family members are having quite a bad time of it with Paul being fined a total £1,000 and urged to ‘seek help’, yet he thinks he doesn’t need it.

He confessed to 209 breaches of betting rules between November 2017 and October 2019 and losing close to £50,000.

Now the Football Association are concerned about the West Brom loan manager who was found to have placed 34 bets involving competitions in which teams he was involved with played.

A betting company contacted the FA to alert them to Terry’s betting activity, with rules prohibiting employees of football clubs placing bets on any football of its kind, whether it involves their club or not.

Terry was found to have gone from placing bets ‘between £2 and £200’ to bets of up to £17,700 on Italy to beat Sweden in November 2017, as well as £10,000 apiece on Manchester United to beat Basel and Germany to beat England within the same month.

In total, Paul Terry was found to have staked £63,800.40 with net losses of £46,916.73 during that span.

His 209 bets averaged over £300 per stake with the commission claiming ‘this figure was significantly skewed due to a handful of disturbingly high-stake bets that were placed’.

An FA report revealed Terry placed ‘bets which included games in competitions that (his) club had participated in during the relevant seasons. The 34 bets were all multiple bets.’

The report continued: “PT stated in interview that he had received education on betting and had been aware of the rules against betting on football albeit he was unsure that it applied to coaching staff.

“PT said that he has gambled all his adult life and that he was betting through boredom when he placed the bets on football.

“He said that he never bets beyond his means (and) did not consider himself to have a betting problem at all.”

The report said: “The Commission was somewhat concerned and curious as to PT’s pattern of betting.

“PT had on a number of occasions placed very large stakes, that on the face of it appear to have been disproportionate to his football-generated income and he had lost a significant amount of money over a relatively short period of time.

“Given the above, the commission members were also concerned that PT did not consider himself to have a betting problem at all.

“The commission would urge PT to seek some help from the PFA, FA or other outside agencies in this regard.”

After retiring from football, Terry was an agent for six years before joining Richie Wellens at Oldham Athletic as the first-team coach in November 2017. He left in January 2018, then returned to Yeovil in the summer of 2018 to take up a role in manager Darren Way’s coaching staff.

Terry joined West Brom as the loan manager for the club in July 2019 to oversee the development of youth and first-team players leaving the club on loan.

Paul and John’s Dad has also got himself into a spot of bother in being handed a ban from driving for 18 months after admitting to drink-driving when he was caught driving over twice the drink-drive limit in the latest in a long line of offences. Read more on that by clicking HERE.
