EFL announce further points deduction for Sheffield Wednesday after multiple breaches

The EFL announce a further points deduction for Sheffield Wednesday after multiple breaches of league regulations.

Henrik Pedersen’s side have been handed a further six point deduction, on top of the 12-point deduction they received on the 24th of October after filing for administration.

Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett said: “Well, it does feel a little bit like kicking a club when it’s down, doesn’t it? But we need to stress that the EFL who brings these charges don’t set the punishments. That’s done by an independent commission. And the EFL has no choice but to do this, really.

“If there are separate breaches of the rules, they have to charge clubs for doing so. And that’s what they have done here.

“The statement we’ve just had from the EFL says, Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to payment obligations.

“With the club’s former owner, Dejphon Chansiri, prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL club for a period of three years.

“Now look, I don’t think Dejphon Chansiri’s going to be back owning an English football club anytime soon. I don’t think he ever will after his record at Sheffield Wednesday.

“But look, let’s take this back. They were given an automatic 12 point deduction for going into administration at the end of October. That’s when Chansiri decided he couldn’t fund the club any further, had to put it into administration. That’s an automatic points deduction.

“And after Sheffield Wednesday lost 3-2 at home to Preston on Saturday, that left them on minus four points at the bottom of the Championship. They’re now on minus 10 points because this has an immediate impact, this points deduction.

“They’re 23 points behind their nearest rivals Norwich, who are in 23rd. They’re 27 points from safety. So I think it’s fair to assume as most Sheffield Wednesday supporters probably felt all season long. They’re almost inevitably going to be relegated to League One this season.”

EFL STATEMENT:

Following earlier media reports, the EFL can confirm that Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL Regulations relating to payment obligations, with Mr Dejphon Chansiri prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL Club for a period of three years.

While matters remain ongoing in respect of the issues being considered by the independent Club Financial Reporting Unit, for alleged breaches in the 2025/26 season prior to the Club entering administration, the League can confirm that it is not seeking any further points deductions from the Club. A full statement will be issued once these matters have been formally concluded.

Separately, the EFL and Sheffield Wednesday remain in discussions regarding its appeal against the fee restriction, which is currently set to run until the end of the winter 2027 transfer window. This is likely to be resolved as part of the Club’s exit from administration.

No further comment will be made at this time.

Fans gave their reaction as the EFL announce a further points deduction for Sheffield Wednesday after multiple breaches…

@s6_swfc: Either the new owner or admin team are gonna have to soon make match day tickets either £10 or £20 a ticket cos seriously getting beat every week and nearly 30 points behind what’s in it for fans now to turn up

@LauraW211324: Are we about to be the first team to ever finish the season on minus points?!

@Jordrl66: If I can find a positive if all of points deductions can be taken this season then it’s best thing to do. Need to avoid the potential -15 next season mind #swfc

@93briggsy: Another 6 points..what the hell is going on. Talk about kicking a wounded dog while it’s down. The club being punished again for that useless TWAT of an owner, it’s unfair “Enjoy this season” go league one with new owners and hopefully a full fresh start from top to bottom #swfc

@barmyowl1212: Another 6 point deduction. Keep it coming @EFL let’s get it all sorted by end of the season. Christmas is the time for giving too remember. #swfc

@CuntyMcsporran: If we’re not careful, this further 6 point deduction could see us dragged in to a relegation scrap #swfc

@jfagej: #swfc fans moaning about the EFL issuing the latest points deduction. What else were we expecting ?? At least it’s been handed quicker than it could have been. Just get the takeover done asap now so we are free of the DC era once and for all.

@Jordrl66: If I can find a positive if all of points deductions can be taken this season then it’s best thing to do. Need to avoid the potential -15 next season mind #swfc

@swfcmunch: We might as well just take all the points deductions this season, we knew we was down at start of season, even further down thanks to that cunt so give us them all now and we get a chance in league one #swfc

@Owlstalk: Can’t wait until we can just go back to talking about the football on the pitch and discussing tactics, players, goals etc again. The sooner this club is bought the better #swfc

At the weekend, Preston came from behind twice to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 away, Charlie McNeill scoring twice to put bottom-placed Wednesday ahead, then had a second-half penalty saved, before Ben Whiteman and Lewis Dobbin had Preston level, then substitute Mads Frøkjær-Jensen grabbed the winner with Sheffield Wednesday bottom and Preston climbing up to 5th.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen said to BBC Radio Sheffield:

“The boys had a fantastic reaction today. The derby last week was tough. The reaction at Millwall was fantastic from the boys, then the first home game from the derby it was a fantastic performance.

“We have spoken a lot about the last two weeks where we have played three games in a week where we have played poor first half but good second half, but the game was normally done after the first half.

“This reaction to be there from the first moment, to put this effort, to put this energy in, I think this half was the best of the season.

“We were strong defensively but we were especially strong on the ball. It makes me proud that the boys can play a first half like this with this confidence, with this belief, with this intensity in a third game in six days.

“We could, we should, have maybe scored one or two more goals. Second half I think we do it really well also, then miss the penalty and, a minute later, a goal in the other. It was tough, but a strong performance.”
