David Prutton’s Championship score predictions have been revealed this week, and yet again he’s proving to be controversial.
The former Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Leeds, Swindon, Sheffield Wednesday, and England U21 footballer who currently works as a presenter, pundit, and commentator has given his thoughts on the outcome of Championship matches.
After looking at the majority of his predictions, it’s found that last season he was mostly accurate and that if you put the scores he’s gone with into a table, it is was similar to the Championship table. See what he scores he went with below…
Birmingham vs Derby
Birmingham have struggled to build a rhythm so far and streaky spells have left them around mid-table, but while a gap between themselves and the drop zone currently stands at nine points, three defeats in the last four have probably set alarm bells ringing.
Wayne Rooney’s unbeaten start as interim Derby boss was ended by Preston at the weekend but with the way in which they’ve been performing, I think they might just grind out a point here. It could even be enough to move them out of the bottom three for the first time since October.
Birmingham: 17th – played 21 – won 5 – drew 8 – lost 8 – 23 points
Derby: 22nd – played 20 – won 3 – drew 7 – lost 10 – 16 points
Prutton predicts: 1-1
Huddersfield vs Blackburn
This is an intriguing one as both teams are difficult to predict. Huddersfield were thumped 5-0 by Bournemouth on December 12, then ran out comfortable 2-0 winners against fellow promotion favourites Watford a week later, before Barnsley came from behind to beat them 2-1 at Oakwell.
Rovers, meanwhile, looked like they might establish themselves among the play-off contenders early on this year but a disappointing December has left them lingering quite a way outside the top six. I just feel as though they might be able to take advantage of the Terriers’ inconsistency.
Huddersfield: 14th – played 21 – won 8 – drew 4 – lost 9 – 28 points
Blackburn: 11th – played 21 – won 8 – drew 5 – lost 8 – 29 points
Prutton predicts: 1-2
Norwich vs QPR
I expect Norwich will be aiming for a quick recovery after their five-game winning streak was ended by Watford in Xisco Munoz’s first game in charge on Boxing Day. Their build-up play was patient and meticulous but they rarely troubled Hornets ‘keeper Ben Foster, which prevented them strengthening their grip on top spot.
Absolutely nothing is going right for Mark Warburton and QPR at the moment, so a meeting with the league leaders couldn’t have come at a worse time. They’ve not won a game since November 24 and the fact they’ve only taken three points from the last 24 available is worrying.
Norwich: 1st – played 21 – won 13 – drew 4 – lost 4 – 43 points
QPR: 19th – played 21 – won 4 – drew 8 – lost 9 – 20 points
Prutton predicts: 2-1
Stoke vs Nottingham Forest
Though Michael O’Neill’s men probably haven’t won as many games as they’d have imagined, they’ve been almost unbeatable over the last month, with seven clean sheets from the last eight.
Such a strong defence may hamper a Forest side who are starting to put their unexpected slide towards the relegation zone behind them, but have found goals very hard to come by, for the most part, this season. I’m going for an engaging, yet low-scoring, draw.
Stoke: 7th – played 21 – won 9 – drew 7 – lost 5 – 34 points
N Forest: 20th – played 21 – won 4 – drew 6 – lost 11 – 18 points
Prutton predicts: 1-1
Brentford vs Bournemouth
All eyes will be on west London on Wednesday night for what’s sure to be an absolute cracker. Brentford are now unbeaten in 14 league games and have started to win games they might not have done a month or so ago. They’ve got another busy month ahead but seem to be taking everything in their stride.
Bournemouth will pose perhaps the most significant threat of any opposition so far, though. They are yet to drop below fourth and have looked strong in both attack and defence across the last few weeks. With the momentum and team spirit generated by the Bees unbeaten run, though, I feel they might just pip it.
Brentford: 4th – played 21 – won 10 – drew 8 – lost 3 – 38 points
Bournemouth: 3rd – played 20 – won 10 – drew 8 – lost 2 – 38 points
Prutton predicts: 3-2
Swansea vs Reading
As usual, it’s getting congested at the top of the Championship table and Swansea rose to the heady heights of second with their win over QPR on Boxing Day. I’ve been really impressed with Steve Cooper’s men this term and I’d say it’s no less than their displays have deserved.
Largely owing to their blistering start, Reading are still clinging on to the play-off places, with a confident 2-1 win over Luton preventing a third straight league loss for Veljko Paunovic’s men. They’ve not looked like the same side since the end of November, though and I’m not sure they’ll take anything back from Wales.
Swansea: 2nd – played 21 – won 11 – drew 6 – lost 5 – 39 points
Reading: 6th – played 21 – won 11 – drew 3 – lost 7 – 36 points
Prutton predicts: 2-1
Sheffield Wednesday vs Middlesbrough
David Prutton has predicted that this Championship fixture will play out to a 2-1 win in favour of Middlesbrough.
On Boxing Day, Tony Pulis was in charge for what turned out to be the final time, drawing 1-1 with Blackburn. Middlesbrough didn’t play.
Sheff Wed: 23rd – played 21 – won 4 – drew 7 – lost 10 – 13* points
Middlesbrough: 8th – played 20 – won 9 – drew 6 – lost 5 – 33 points
* = minus 6 points
Luton vs Bristol City
David Prutton has predicted that this Championship fixture will play out to a 1-1 draw between the two sides.
On Boxing Day, Nathan Jones’ side lost 2-1 against Reading, whereas Brsitol City won 2-1 against Wycombe.
Luton: 15th – played 21 – won 7 – drew 6 – lost 8 – 27 points
Bristol City: 9th – played 21 – won 10 – drew 3 – lost 8 – 33 points
Preston vs Coventry
David Prutton has predicted that this Championship fixture will play out to a 1-0 win in favour of Preston.
On Boxing Day, Alex Neil’s side won 1-0 with a late winner thanks to Browne against Derby, Coventry could only draw 0-0 with Stoke.
Preston: 13th – played 21 – won 9 – drew 2 – lost 10 – 29 points
Coventry: 18th – played 21 – won 5 – drew 8 – lost 8 – 23 points
David Prutton has predicted that this Championship fixture will play out to a 2-1 win in favour of Barnsley.
On Boxing Day, Rotherham were out of action due to Covid-19 within their squad, whereas Barnsley got a 2-1 victory when they hosted Huddersfield.
Rotherham: 21st – played 19 – won 4 – drew 4 – lost 11 – 16 points
Barnsley: 10th – played 21 – won 9 – drew 4 – lost 8 – 31 points
Wycombe vs Cardiff
David Prutton has predicted that this Championship fixture will play out to a 2-1 win in favour of Cardiff City.
On Boxing Day, the Chairboys fell to a 2-1 defeat against Bristol City, whilst Cardiff also lost, 3-2 at home to Brentford.
Wycombe: 24th – played 21 – won 2 – drew 6 – lost 13 – 12 points
Cardiff: 12th – played 21 – won 8 – drew 5 – lost 8 – 29 points
