David Prutton’s Championship score predictions

David Prutton’s Championship score predictions have been revealed ahead of the next round of matches for the 2023/24 season.

The ex-Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Leeds, Swindon, Sheffield Wednesday, and England U21 footballer who currently works as a presenter, pundit, and commentator, has given his verdict.

Watch Birmingham City v Norwich City, Ipswich Town v Huddersfield Town and Leeds United v Southampton games live across Sky Sports with highlights of the other EFL matches on Sky Sports News, ITV and YouTube.

Sky Sports duo Simeon Gholam and David Prutton gave a preview heading into the final game of the regular season, predicting the results of every fixture; listen to the podcast below or via any of your regular podcast providers.

Leeds v Southampton

Leeds United will face Southampton on Saturday afternoon fully aware that they must secure a win in order to maintain their aspirations of automatic promotion from the Championship.

Currently positioned third in the standings, Leeds will be up against Southampton, who are placed fourth but find themselves six points behind their opponents at Elland Road.

Ipswich v Huddersfield

Ipswich Town will welcome Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon, fully aware that a draw will guarantee their promotion to the Premier League.

As the Tractor Boys are on the verge of securing second place in the Championship standings, Huddersfield’s chances of avoiding relegation are slim due to their inferior goal difference in comparison to their competitors.

Birmingham v Norwich

“Birmingham have had a poor season, chopped and changed managers which hasn’t helped,” Prutton said on the Sky Sports Championship Predictions podcast.

“They set a ridiculous remit at the very top, getting rid of John Eustace and saying they wanted no fear football, not lived up to that at all.

“Of course, Tony comes in and then comes away, and continued best wishes towards him.

“Gary has done his utmost since he’s been in, but they’ve given themselves a mountain to climb.

“It’s a lack of distinct leadership that’s led them to here, a couple of poor performances, a porous defence and a blunt attack, and that’s what gets you in the bottom three.”

Plymouth v Hull

“There’s a lot of good stuff that’s happened (at Plymouth), but they’ve chopped and changed purely because Steven Schumacher moved on to Stoke,” Prutton said on the Sky Sports Championship Predictions podcast.

“Ian Foster came in, that didn’t work out, and now they’ve got a Director of Football trying to guide them over the line, and it remains to be seen if that was a good decision or not.

“You look at the two teams that came up, and what they’ve done compared to Ipswich, and it’s a tough stick to beat them with.

“If Plymouth stay up, it’s been a wonderful season for them, there’s a lot to like about them but a lot to put right as well.”

Sunderland v Sheffield Wednesday

Questioned if Danny Rohl has done a good job at Hillsborough, Prutton said: “It is now, because they’re out of the bottom three.

“He was doing perceived good work, but they were still in the bottom three.

“Now that they’ve come out of the bottom three, without being too cynical, that’s when it becomes good work.

“You can change x, y and z in the team, but if you get relegated, it’s not a job well done at all, you just get relegated in a slightly better manner if that’s not too much of an oxymoron.

“If he gets them safe, it’s a fantastic job, if they go down, it’s not.”

Leicester v Blackburn

Leicester have already clinched the title, while the visitors are currently in 19th place. Leicester go into this game with a four-point lead over Ipswich Town, having sealed the title last week with a 3-0 win against Preston North End.

The team is on a three-game winning run, having beaten West Brom and Southampton in their previous matches and will finish the season with the best defensive record in the league, having conceded only 39 goals in 45 matches.

Their home form has been impressive, with 17 wins, one draw, and four losses in 22 Championship games. The Foxes will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak at home, which began on the 1st of April against Norwich.

On the other hand, Blackburn Rovers have had a disappointing season and are fighting to avoid relegation on the final day.

They currently have 50 points after 45 matches, just three points ahead of Birmingham City, who are in the relegation zone.

Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle are in 20th and 21st place but Blackburn and Birmingham have the same goal difference (-16), meaning that if the teams below them win, Rovers will be relegated.

Blackburn’s last match was a goalless draw against Coventry at home, following a costly defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

Away from Ewood Park, Blackburn have managed seven wins, four draws, and 11 losses this season. They suffered a 4-1 defeat to Leicester earlier in the campaign and are considered the underdogs in this upcoming match.

West Brom v Preston

West Brom’s impressive track record at The Hawthorns indicates a straightforward victory for the home team on Saturday.

However, if Hull manages to score early on at Plymouth Argyle, the match could turn into a fiercely contested battle for the Baggies.

Preston, on the other hand, are struggling to reach the finish line in the second-tier league, and it would be a surprise if they can hinder the Baggies’ aspirations of securing a top-six position in this final day game.
