Controversy over Luton opener ruled offside; Sunderland’s Luke O’Nien JUMPS into brawl

There was controversy over Luton having their opener ruled offside; and at full time, Sunderland’s Luke O’Nien JUMPS into a brawl.

Carlton Morris was incensed after his opener for the Hatters was controversially ruled offside, Luton thought he was onside, when he slotted the ball past the keeper with the game goalless, only for the flag to go up.

Chris Rigg and Romaine Mundle netted either side of an Elijah Adebayo equaliser to send the Black Cats three points clear at the top of the Championship table.

Then following the 2-1 win at Luton, Sunderland captain Luke O’Nien jumped in to a brawl between the two sides at full-time at Kenilworth Road.

Luton’s Rob Edwards, per Sky Sports: “I feel disappointed at the moment.

“Credit to Sunderland, they’ve come away from home and won the game, they’re top of the league for a reason.

“We’re bitterly disappointed. We dominated the game from start to finish.”

Luton manager Rob Edwards told BBC Three Counties Radio:

“I’ve just watched back Carlton’s offside goal and I’m not sure – I know they’ve got to make snap judgements and we haven’t got VAR, but Bernardo Silva’s at the weekend [for Manchester City against Wolves] wasn’t [deemed to be offside] and I don’t think [Jordan Clark] is affecting the play at all, and Carlton is certainly not offside.

“The first goal is so important, the first goal came against the run of play, we fought back but the two moments of quality they had, they punished us.

“We had 20 shots but only four on target. We’ve had so much pressure but that final bit was lacking and here we are, we’ve lost the game.”

Sunderland’s Regis Le Bris: “They have a strong style of play which is difficult with the second balls.

“They played very well and it’s hard to escape this pressure. We did well in the first five or six minutes and didn’t take the opportunity to score.

“We struggled to apply pressure to their back three and conceded many corner kicks, they are strong.

“I’m very proud of the team’s spirit and behaviour in the game. Again it’s a good win.”

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris told BBC Radio Newcastle:

“We played an opponent that played very well with direct play and counter-pressing after the first contact.

“It’s very difficult against this kind of team to play under pressure and to escape the press. But in that kind of scenario, we know they are on the edge so if they make a mistake, we would have a huge space.

“We had two opportunities early in the game, we didn’t score, but we felt it was possible. We changed two or three details to adjust our pressing, and when we had the opportunities to score, we did it.”

[On being three points clear at the top] “I don’t care about the table at the moment, the season is so long. I’m just focused on the improvement of the team.”

Here’s how fans reacted to controversy over Luton having their opener ruled offside; and Sunderland’s Luke O’Nien who JUMPS into a brawl between players…

ON THE GOAL RULED OUT:

@KevTS1988: Number 18 was offside when from 1st header and he went to play the ball with his head. Even though it didn’t touch him, he made a play for the ball thus interfering with play. Correct decision

@Wes_safc86: Literally the correct decision

@SafcSongs: Number 18 was miles offside!! He jumped to try n header the ball! So surely that’s interfering with play! 🤦‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️ not exactly a shocking decision at all! It’s 100% correct decision

@artlowy8: Maybe he was 3 yards offside 🤔

@CroasdellJosh: I’m assuming it’s given against the player who’s on the keeper and comes back from an offside position to attempt to head the ball, rather than against the player who’s scored. Correct decision for me

@LutonNews_LTFC: RE: “If we had VAR then maybe it would have been ruled back in our favour. I just think he starts in an offside position on the goalkeeper, but then he’s coming away from it and I don’t think he affects the play, the direction of the ball, any Sunderland player at all.”

@LTFC_Dave: Gutless from the referee not to overrule his linesman. More interested in protecting the boys than getting decisions right

@JackWFC1234: Taking my bias aside because I OBVIOUSLY don’t wanna stick up for Luton, but this is an absolute joke of a decision hahaha. Anyone thinking that some sort of video review isn’t needed in all levels of football are truly kidding themselves.

@LutonReport: State of these officials 😤

@andyoots: As a Sunderland supporter that was a tough watch, the “offside” goal should have stood. You’ll pick up plenty of points if you continue to play that aggressively. We nicked it as we have a lot of quality & resilience, but on balance you definitely deserved something.

@darko_john888: “I don’t think it was offside…’ It comes to something when professional football managers don’t know the laws of the game, maybe he’s just being disingenuous ?

@jwayball: If Clark attempted To play it he would have played it considering he saw the full flight of the ball and had no one around him. He doesn’t stop anyone else around him getting the ball either. Anyone who claims that’s offside is a midwit

ON O’NIEN:

@samcrowe28: Most attention seeking bloke in the championship

@snoof4u: How can you not love Luke O’Nien!? 🤣🤣❤️❤️

@MFos2: An absolute shithouse, but our shithouse ❤️

@LTFC_Dave: What an absolute gimp. Even his own team mates are embarrassed by him

@Kevsafc22: 😅😅😅 never change Luke

@amybobbles: Such a nob

@TheOnlyToma97: Don’t think it could ever be said too much that I love Luke O’Nien 😂 #SAFC

@joel_gradwell: Just when I don’t think I can adore the man anymore. Luke goes and does another very ‘Luke’ thing 🤣❤️

@liiamholmes: Can’t stand the fucker honestly the most irritating twat in football

@SamJohnsonxx: Luke never fails 😂😂 #safc
