Commentators left baffled as Carlisle keeper produces bizarre howler to gift Cheltenham win

Commentators were left baffled as Carlisle United keeper Tomas Holy produces a bizarre howler to gift Cheltenham Town a 1-0 win.

Just 7 minutes in, Cheltenham had the ball in the net but Lloyd was flagged for offside, and then on 19 minutes, Carlisle had a goal disallowed of their own, Jon Mellish being denied.

One that did count however, and of which turned out to be the winner, came on the 27th minute, with Liam Sercombe poking home at the back post after Holy fumbled the ball in the area when trying to prevent it from going out for a corner.

He ended up somehow spilling the ball with Lloyd put it on a plate for Sercombe to score, and as you can hear on the video below, those inside the ground couldn’t believe what they were seeing…

Considering Cheltenham failed to score in their opening 11 games of the campaign, the Robins are showing great signs of improvement, having now scored in 10 successive matches, during which run they have picked up all four of their victories this season.

And while they Darrell Clarke’s side remain bottom of the League One standings, they are now within three points of safety.

Clarke said post-match: “We have put ourselves into the fight, I firmly believe.

“Let’s make no bones about it, two or three months ago we were nowhere near it.

“Now, we are fighting and scrapping away and trying as hard as we possibly can to stay in the league.”

“To not get any points from that one [defeat to Leyton Orient] and then coming here, it was a big game for both teams,” he continued.

“My lads stood up to the challenge. It wasn’t a classic, but it was never going to be in gale force winds and we defended our goal superbly.

“A little bit of quality and a mistake from their goalie and we win the game, so I am delighted.”

Carlisle boss Paul Simpson said: “We got what we deserved, which is absolutely nothing.

“I am embarrassed to say it, but Cheltenham wanted it more than us and that’s a rubbish thing to have to say.

“They competed, they won first contacts, got onto second balls and we were poor in possession.

“The mistake was horrendous and I am getting fed up of talking about goalkeeping mistakes. It gave them something to hang on to and they absolutely did that, while we didn’t have enough, it’s as simple as that.”

This is how fans reacted with commentators left baffled as the Carlisle keeper produces a bizarre howler to gift Cheltenham the win…

@markwilsondj: I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it live. Now I’ve seen this it looks even worse

@lewis06797925: hopefully never plays again, useless

@epouvantail: Obviously the keeper is 100% to blame for the goal. But what on earth is Armer doing here?! Why double up and leave that guy open? So bad #cufc

@lukeIrons443447: Holy should never ever wear the Carlisle shirt again.

@bafc_lancaster: Get the swear button ready @bbccumbriasport

@leecrowe007: Last season a good defence clouded over the fact he was shite, but never thought he’d get as bad as the last 3 games. Everyone was shite today but having that behind you can’t help

@Nathancufc: Ahahahaha get him gone. Laughing stock of the EFL

@0161quorn: What a peculiar set of Sercombestances

@Cazzum01: Holy’s obviously made the most glaring error here but what on earth is Armer doing? He did this 3 or 4 times in the game too!

@EJP_xx: What the fuck is that like 🤣 #cufc

@DavidJav9954: Sunday league keepers shouldn’t be conceding like Holy, but here we are paying him to do it #cufc @officialcufc

@JonnyBrough: Check the geezers betting account and get him out of Brunton Park

@MarkMunn01: Holy couldn’t save a word document at the moment!

@daverigg: Simpson is getting far too much of a free ride for my liking. Any other past manager of CUFC would be under immense pressure by now.
