Class of 92-owned League Two club Salford City announce major plans while looking for further investment to take them to the next level.
Reports claim that the Ammies, who are co-owned by iconic United players such as David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, have already had “some interest” in taking an equity investment..
Over the past ten years, Salford has progressed from the Northern Premier League First Division to the English Football League, with average attendance figures increasing from 140 to 2,947.
Despite facing challenges, including the collapse of plans to relocate to the AJ Bell Stadium, the club’s ownership, which includes businessman Peter Lim and former United players, remains dedicated to its growth objectives.
The recent appointment of Karl Robinson as head coach reflects the club’s commitment to progress, with aspirations to eventually compete in the Championship.

Salford City FC and its Board of Directors (the “Board”) have launched a process to explore new strategic partners for the club to support its ambitious growth targets.
Current owners and management (led by the Class of ’92) remain fully committed to the club but are open to the possibility of the right new partner investing alongside the group with a view to capitalising on the club’s significant sporting, media/commercial and infrastructure opportunities.
As part of the process, the Board intends to consider a range of potential partners and some interest in new equity investment in the club has already been received. The process coincides with the 10-year anniversary of the club’s acquisition by the Class of ’92 and the implementation of a new strategic plan to strengthen and grow Salford City FC. This includes the development of its football infrastructure, expansion of its commercial and media operations and a continued rise through the football pyramid.
CEO Nicky Butt said: “We are backing Salford City with as much commitment and confidence as ever. We have achieved very special things here but there are major opportunities in front of us and we want to make sure we have the right mix of investment and strategic partners to take advantage of those opportunities. We had an original 10-year plan and with strong foundations now in place, it was always the intention to explore options for the next phase. That includes potentially bringing in new partners to help us grow the club and best serve the fans and community.”
Tifosy Capital & Advisory is acting as the Company’s exclusive financial advisor.
Salford City FC does not intend to make any further announcements regarding the review unless the Board approves a specific course of action.
– STATEMENT ENDS –
Accrington Stanley chairman Andy Holt gave his thoughts on this, here’s what he said in his Twitter thread…
It’s full of clubs trapped between the ex @premierleague parachute clubs and a big loss if relegated.
Big clubs have fallen victim to this trap…@SunderlandAFC @OfficialBWFC @dcfcofficial @LaticsOfficial @Rovers @swfc to name but a few.
All ending up playing @ASFCofficial

…real WHY is this, and most tell me this…
They see the only chance of getting out of their clubs with any hope of recovering some of the accumulated losses is to get to the Championship and SELL.
But there are already clubs up there whose owners would happily sell already.
— Andyh (@AndyhHolt) February 27, 2024
…get to champ and sell idea is flawed.
It’s more likely to be a get to champ, lose multi millions annually, then get relegated back.
That’s unless a club has very wealthy owners that can fund an attempt to reach the top tier.
Many have tried and losses are in the ££hundreds…
— Andyh (@AndyhHolt) February 27, 2024
…with ambition to make a name for themselves regardless of cost.
Its a split between owners saying “it’s my money, I’ll spend it how I want”
And owners accepting you can go up and down in football, but you shouldn’t gamble club.
If I said on here I wanted @ASFCofficial…
— Andyh (@AndyhHolt) February 27, 2024
It’s shit really. I have big ambitions, I want all my businesses at the top of their respective fields.
It’s draining.
My patience is shot.
I have to keep revisiting why I took the job on in the first place.
The community.
Without that it would have long since..
— Andyh (@AndyhHolt) February 27, 2024
Losing £20m a year football isn’t a threat to your long term wealth. Cash is nearly always held in a tax haven.
I can’t compete with these folks.
What’s more, attempting to compete would destroy our community club.
Survival alone is a real achievement.
We need to change..

Good morning BTW.

This is what Twitter users had to say as Class of 92-owned Salford City announce major plans while looking for further investment…
@JakeSma42093709: Ran out of money have we lads?
@Robb_Whitehead: Great investment opportunity. Pitch on dragons den!
@JN_231: You’ll need some fans to grow lads
@TomFred85: Hmmmmmmm, might be wrong, but reading between the lines that doesn’t sound good 🤔🤔
@baldy984: I’m no business guru but… Try going 6 months without sacking a manager and maybe you’ve have some money in the bank!
@BenjaminGrocott: That’s an interesting way of saying we need some more money to try be less shit
@richyhardy: I’d suggest if the class of 92 and Peter Lim haven’t got the money to grow a club with no fans then no one has (unless you get Bill Gates on board)
@KooshyKooo: Another publicity stunt investment just like when they brought Beckham on board…. They have Peter Lim as an owner… a billionaire and a load of multi millionaire’s don’t need outside investment for a league 2 club…
@KB127: If they can’t make it work despite the ridiculous share they’ve enjoyed of what little publicity & tv money the lower leagues get they should jack it in. Attendances are awful and their main achievement has been to take money and publicity from other clubs.
@bigdbwfc: Into the championship with less than 5,000 thru the gates 🫣
@BigTom0491: Salford simply don’t the fanbase to support a Championship club! As football not reached a point yet where clubs are virtually self sustainable? Can’t keep setting crazy budgets if sponsorship, attendance etc simply ain’t big enough to sustain the budget. Course you don’t want to hear it as a supporter! But for long term club health and future ultimately your club needs to be at its level, so if owner decides had enough you ain’t up the creek without a paddle.
@cluelesspegg: Mr Holt, you are totally right. The funding strategy is rigged to make the prem elite with other clubs little to no chance. The No. of Champ clubs close to the wall is ridiculous. Unless buyers sought a number of clubs will collapse. Good luck with Accers #swfc #wawaw
@davethevalefan: Always good to hear a owners thoughts, and to the point, no PR spin. We are at the vale have carol shanahan, been fantastic for us, but frustrating in other aspects ie, flitcroft issues. But we had horrendous ones before.
@BigBods1: This is correct. Football needs a reset, but sadly probably won’t happen and lots of lower league clubs with just go out of business as owners can’t afford or don’t want to keep on propping them up. Meanwhile the Sky Six will make a load more money in the super league
@SPHscout: Why? Where is the growth? Their play off home crowd last season was pathetic.
@wadelee1990: @GNev2 get the glazers in 😂😂😂
@davescounty: Would be better getting some supporter’s first 🤣
@Daveified: Throwing money hasn’t worked and we’re getting bored… Anyone else wanna throw some money?
@blueman2668: Tell them to go onto dragons den , there’s a bloke giving money away on there
These new Strategic Partners, Will they be wearing wellies to use the toilets in the away end?@GNev2 pic.twitter.com/Vcwv3oV1TW
