Chris Wilder says his side were “mugged” by Bassette’s ‘dark arts’ to provoke Ahmedhodzic red

Chris Wilder says his side were “mugged” by Norman Bassette’s ‘dark arts’ to provoke Anel Ahmedhodzic into a red card.

An altercation occurred on the field involving players from both Sheffield United and Coventry, with defender Anel Ahmedhodzic being sent off after reacting to an incident with Norman Bassette in the final moments of the first half.

The initial foul was committed by the Sky Blues striker, who had already scored for the home side, after which Bassette shouted at Ahmedhodzic and appeared to grasp him by the neck.

This provoked a furious reaction from Ahmedhodzic, who struck Bassette, prompting players from both teams to converge on the location.

Referee Darren Bond intervened to try and calm the situation down, before issuing a red card to the Sheffield United player and a yellow card to the Coventry player.

Following Saturday’s Championship action, the result leaves Sheffield United 2nd with 32 points from 16 games (2 deducted), while Coventry are 17th with 17 points from the same amount played.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said on Ahmedhodzic, per the Star: “I think it was from the off, really. The boy’s gone down twice in the box twice, he just got outmuscled. I didn’t think there was anything in it but he went down easily and then he tried to leave his elbow on the back, which everyone’s seen.

“And then when Anel’s gone down. The [provication] wasn’t enough for Anel’s reaction, I’m not condoning it at all and he’s going to miss three games. He’s a big player for us and internally we’re going to have to deal with that because we can’t afford that. Games are tough enough in this division, especially against a top side.

“There were a couple of little bits and he’s touched Anel – as I said, not trying to defend him – and Anel’s done what he’s done. To his neck, though, not his face. The boy’s holding his face after being pushed in the neck. He did what he needed to do for his team. I don’t think I’d be too happy if that was flipped. I’m not so sure we’ve had any instances of that in my period in charge.

“We’ve been mugged really by him, but Anel should know better. If someone pushes me in the neck, I’m not sure I’m going down but I get why he’s done it. I’m certainly not holding my face and rolling around for five minutes.”

Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“These are a good group of players we were up against, who are under achieving and are one of the top four or five strongest squads in the division. They’ve decided to turn it on. And that makes this a big point and an important point for us.

“I’m a Mark Robins fan and maybe I can’t keep my mouth shut. But, if they’d run around like that the last 14 or 15 games, maybe somebody would have a job still. Maybe there’s a new manager sat in the stand and they were trying to impress, but maybe they should have tried to impress Mark Robins a bit more.

“I’ve no complaints about the red card. I told the ref that at half-time. He had nowhere to go with it, if that’s the way certain players want to behave – and we now lose a big player for three games,

“He tried to leave one on Anel early on and went over twice looking for penalties to try and con the referee. Anel should know better. He fell for the three-card trick but their player’s gone down like he’s been hit by Mike Tyson, holding his face when the contact was clearly around the neck.”

Coventry City interim boss Rhys Carr told BBC CWR:

“The players have shown incredible character and spirit in the last couple of games. We don’t want to take a punch on the nose first; that’s the one disappointing thing. But we’ve still come back against two of the top teams in this division

“They’ve applied themselves so well, but that comes from the training during the week. You can’t just switch it on and off on a Saturday. It’s about how you train.

“And, with the bit of quality we’ve got, we always feel confident we can do things. That goal will give Norman Bassette a spring in his step. His enthusiasm is infectious.

“As regards the red card incident, I’d have to see it back but those sort of things happen every week, trying to provoke and upset the opposition. If Norman has done anything wrong, we’ll have a word.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Chris Wilder says his side were “mugged” by Bassette’s ‘dark arts’ to provoke Ahmedhodzic into a red..

@ThatCovPod: Rapid. Shithouse. Wind-up merchant. Good at football. Norman Bassette isn’t Viktor Gyokeres – he’s Jamie Vardy. #PUSB

@baggy2569: Bassette for @Coventry_City is a disgrace. Yes he was shoved over but holding his face like he’d been punched then winking and laughing after the Sheff player was sent off is Shocking. Should get retrospective red for that the 🔔 end

@Moseley3_: I fuckin love Norman Bassette 🤣

@andy_cov93: That’s exactly where I want Bassette to use his anger. Rather than getting himself booked get them. Superb centre forward petulance there 👏👏👏👏

@Nobby_11: Bassette is a horrible little bastard ain’t he and I love it, proper Vardy vibes about him

@Maddog1889: What an absolute wanker that Bassette is, the worst cunt going.

@SocialEngland66: Fair play Bassette, got Ahmedhodzic hook line and sinker.

@davidcollinscv4: That is absolutely fantastic, horrible, shithousery from Bassette. Something we’ve been massively missing since Michael Doyle. Naughty Norman #PUSB #SkyBlues

@Ijblade: Horrible piece of shit that bassette get him done

@WLodge_39: This Bassette is a right little cunt. Watching from a neutral point of view, seems to be massively overrated as well? #COVSHU

@Aaronnn_96: Chris Wilder: “If they’d run about like that more often then a manager might still be in a job” – He’s rattled but he might have made a good point there 😂 #PUSB

@Mac1965: Brilliant – absolutely brilliant – post-match interview from Chris Wilder. Says it exactly how it is. He unequivocally gets our club (and the game in general). #sufc ⚔️⚔️

@ThatCovPod: Bassette is an absolute icon. #PUSB

@spud8550: Bassette is going to be a fans favourite ain’t he. That’s the shithousery we need. #PUSB

@Anthony_Hornsby: Bassette is go in to break our hearts one day but jheez he’s so fun to watch 🤣 #pusb

@b_wisey82: Bassette is an absolute shithouse. And I love it! #PUSB

@andy_cov93: It’s nice to be feeling disappointed for not beating them to be fair, Asante on for Bassette was a terrible sub – Bassette had them ran ragged and just needed a striker partner

@dannyhall04: Ahmedhodzic was goaded by Bassette but got up and shoved the City man to the floor, giving ref Bond a decision to make and he brandished the red. On first viewing, not sure he can have any complaints #sufc
